Yup they are costly. Even 2nd hand on ebay is crazy.

Ouch. I'm a huge snap-on fan, but I ended up having to go with SK's for my stubbies. The SK's don't fit the fasteners quite as nice, but you can't torque them that hard anyways.

I'd love to have Snap-on stubbies some day though.

That is just ridiculous. That set definitely does not worth over $1000. That kind of price drive DIYers to buy HF tools.

I'm glad someone gets it.... This place is like Adam sandlers movie 50 first dates, it like they wake up every morning and are stunned that Snap on tools are expensive. On a side note... No way in hell that I'd give 1k for stubby wrenches even if I was a professional wrench turner.

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

Usually a guy will need just one of those wrenches; not the whole set. The 1'' short wrench is popular with General Aviation mechanics to tighten the threaded spark plug wire leads on on Lycoming and Continental engines so they don't have to worry about over torquing them.

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

That is a master short set. They are on average a little shorter then a RP except when they get into the bigger sizes. I own the larger ones. Those are not "stubbies", but the next size longer. SO stubby set only goes to 3/4"

Try matco and Mac. I was a technician about 6 years ago and the price of Snap-On Tools have jumped quite a bit bit. I inherited my father's mechanic tools since he started working about 30to 35 years ago. I can't imagine how much it's going to cost if I ever get the tools stolen from my garage.

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT!!!!!!
I bought a set just like that, off brand, no-brand-stamp at all from ebay for $20 shipped, lol, and they do the job perfectly.
I mean really though....for a stubby wrench set, you could buy ANY brand and it would be okay, so why not go for the cheapest.

It's definitely a set of tools that falls on the "How-often-will-I-use-these-to-justify-the-cost" category. I'd assume they fall short compared to other tools that do justify the cost.

AND, if you need a certain size/length/width, etc comibation that only this S/O offers, then only buy that one....

Stubby wrenches I use most are 18mm on power steering lines and 1-1/16 on EGR tubes.

I've been impressed by GearWrench tools. In addition to their ratchet wrenches, I've also got standard wrenches, ratchets, and sockets and have been very impressed with their quality. Highly recommended for a DIYer.

Thanks for the obvious.

The price is outrageous, but saying that things like this drive DIYers to HF is just as so.

It's not a DIYer brand, it's a pro brand. Snap-on's not going to sell a set that people don't buy. What someone could use a stubby 1-5/16" wrench for is beyond me. The 26pc crowfoot set is close to $900. The standard length wrench set is over $1600.

This is what happens when thousands of people buy broken tools on ebay and have their drivers swap them out for brand new replacements.

Snap-on isn't a DIYer brand.

Why not? Some people say a $5k camera isn't a "non-professional" camera. I tend to like things done right and to the best of my abilities - oftentimes tools need to be as best as they can to get the best results. Granted, in this particular example I could turn a nut/bolt with a Craftsman/SK/GW stubby as well as I could with a SO stubby, but to write off SO as not a "DIYer" brand is kind of silly. I buy SO on things that I want to last a LONG time without doubting.

Again, that set is obnoxiously expensive, but don't write off SO as only for professionals. If SO had a retail store (online is fine, but retail is better) I would definitely walk in and get in trouble.

I use stubby wrenches exclusively, so maybe it would make sense for me to buy this snap-on set.

Again, the context of my statement was in response to "that kind of price drives DIYers to HF."

It's not a DIYer brand. Do you think Snap-on top brass sits around the table thinking about how to better serve DIY users? No, they don't, they focus their attention solely on pro and industrial users.

The fact that you're a DIYer and have pro-grade tools doesn't make the tools DIYer tools, they're pro tools and that's that.

Snap-on isn't a DIYer brand and does not adhere to consumer pricing. Their pricing reflects the level of quality and has a premium built in to cover a replacement or two and to support the services franchise owners provide.

That's true but by the same token Miller TIG welders were never a "DIY" brand either. What you find, though, is that DIY'ers are more and more capable given the tools/technology of today. There was a point where my friends told me I couldn't "DIY" powder coat, machine, weld...

It's not like TIG welders got any cheaper, it's that "DIY'ing" to the fullest extent is expensive. If I need a dead on accurate torque wrench whether I work for NASA or on the weekend, I need an accurate torque wrench. I have a couple $300 - $400 torque wrenches. I don't have a $1,000 stubby set. But you need what you need.

I think what Stuey is saying is that Snap-on's main targeted customer is the professional mechanic or industrial worker who are a lot more quality conscious than the average consumer that does his own maintenance around the house. Snap-on couldn't survive if it had to depend on the types of people that walk into Sears.

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

I have never understood the value of 'Snap On' tools. I guess if you have more money than sense OR want to impress your friends and colleags it would be fine but the value is just not there. Now don't get me wrong, they are great tools and I wish ALL my tools were Snap On and I drove a Rolls Royce but not practical for me. I will just stay with my lowly Craftsman Wrenches and continue to be the common person I am.

Maybe it is just Mechanics Jewelry.

Most of your posts are correct, in my opinion. I if you're NOT using them to make a living, then the cost of most any SO tool is probably not worth it to DIY one or 2 jobs at home and people who do spend that kinda money just do so just because they want / like to or they justify it because they intend to do a LOT of DIY'n.

At the same time, I use a 1 5/16" standard length wrench nearly every day - Lots of odd sized fittings in high pressure water systems and hydraulics work that I do - much of it takes 1" or bigger.....While I will not buy that whole set in question, I HAVE made note of a few of those bigger odd wrenches I will order some separately as my standard length wrenches can be a bit unwieldy PITA to use when working around other parts of the equipment -- short ones would be nice.

The vacuum advance housing on my Fairlane. One would have saved me half an hour of fighting, fussing and screaming.

Personally, I only have a smattering of Snapon stuff at the house - mostly that which they have far eclipsed others in quality of manufacturing (ratcheting screwdrivers and picks for example) and some stuff that was a NEED NOW type of thing (why leave a ride down for a minimum of three days waiting on an internet order).

Exactly.. This is Why Miller Welding Products arent sold in Sears or HF. Doesnt mean that the Consumer cant choose to purchase these products, Its just not who they are marketed to.

I can't argue with you there. I have professional woodworking equipment, a dental dust extractor, and industrial hand tools.

From a DIYer perspective, heck no. There are simply too many other less expensive, high quality, USA-made alternatives available.

I think what Stuey is saying is that Snap-on's main targeted customer is the professional mechanic or industrial worker who are a lot more quality conscious than the average consumer that does his own maintenance around the house. Snap-on couldn't survive if it had to depend on the types of people that walk into Sears.

Snap-on's only targeted customer is the professional mechanic or industrial user. Their licensed products are the only ones targeted to Joe Consumer.

That wasn't really my main point; I was just in disagreement with the claim these prices are driving DIYers to HF. It's like saying that filet mignon prices at the gourmet restaurant are driving people to Burger King. Sounds good, but doesn't make a lick of sense.

Re: I love SnapOn tools ..BUT

Not to answer for Stuey but that's where I stand firm - that's not even appropriate for a professional

Just a stupid question here from Denmark: Will the pro user pay the full price, or will he get a 30-50% discount? If I go to a proshop Hazet dealer a 13 mm spanner would be, say, $25. But the blue collar guy with an account gets a 40% discount.
