SK is my choice. My set goes from 3/8 to 1.5".

It's the 12pt set in the middle.

If you're a weekend wrencher I'd say Craftsman. If you're a pro, I'd go with a truck brand or proto/sk/etc..

For what it's worth, I have a set of new USA Craftsman in SAE/MM. If you're interested pm me..

What do you work on that needs 12pt sockets?

If you're not doing 12 point fasteners, 6 point sockets are stronger and last longer.

You especially wouldn't need 12-point DEEP. You may find a 12-point bolt every once in a while but how often would find something 12-point with a stud that requried the clearance of a deep socket?

Probably right probably don't need a deep I just noticed the other day I didn't have that set in 1/2 but the sets I have looked up are kind of high

Mainly air craft, aerospace, and mil-spec stuff for 12pt nuts and bolts. but if you were working on that stuff you would already know and have it. I think the 12 point stuff is left over from the old days when a breaker bar would have to be used. But now with two foot long ratchets that can take the punishment 12 points aren't needed as much anymore.

I'm actually adding to my 12 point collection because we get 5 gallon buckets of used aerospace hardware from somebody we know. Lots of titanium and all 12 point. It's great to work with and we use it on the trucks and 4x4s.

I bought this set on ebay when I was looking for 1/2" drive metric deep sockets. I just wanted the cheapest American made set I could find and Craftsman fit the bill. Not nearly as nice as Proto or any of the other brands I have, but for how much I use them they will work perfectly.

My 12 point deep SAEs are a mash up of a bunch of different stuff... Snap On, SK, Mac, Husky, Kobalt.

If I were to buy a set new, I'd go with my usual suspects... SK, Williams USA, Proto, Wright...

Since when are 12 point sockets weak and have a short life? Is there an expiration date that are on them that 6 point sockets do not have? I'm using 60 year old 12 point Bonney sockets everyday at work without any issues.

Personally, I would look at SK or Wright. Another option is finding Bonney 12 point lobular (my favorite). You could also look at used Snap On.

The guys are right. the 12pt socket are sort of a throwback to ratchetless socket sets of the 20's to 60's. Then they were still found to be useful in the days of low tooth count ratchets.

But the things are far from dead and useless. I prefer a 6 pt but have no qualms of using a 12 pt in its place. A quality socket in either will work equally. Any ratchet 45t and more you get no advantage from 12pts, until of course you have to use the breaker bar on something and that 6pt won't give you an angle for the available space.

The idea of 12 pts being weaker I think stems from the older cheap socket sets of the 50's into the 80's. Be they domestic Duro-Indestro or the nameless Asains that flooded the markets for years they fit the myth perfectly. I experienced it myself as a kid and young adult.
Today's offerings in any brand name are better by far and work as well as any other socket, used properly.

12pt sockets are still 100% needed IMO.

The ammout of times I've had to turn 6pt socket 1/4 turn on the bar is no ones buisness. (Turn it 1/4 will give another bite, just like a 12pt)

If you wanna be smart then don't buy a big set. 10-19mm then 21, 22, 24, 27, 30, 32mm. Am sure plenty have stories but av never needed a 23, 25, 26, 28, 29mm socket.

I only buy 6pt chrome because the Vans don't really stock much 12pt stuff.

If I could go at it again IDE do all chrome 12pt and 6pt impacts.

gtlaw those photos are downright ****.

The norm for most taiwan made sockets, ie kobalt, husky, pittsburgh pro, williams, etc are 6 pt shallow 12pt deep. There should be no way to not find these. In some cases, finding deep 6pt chrome sockets are harder than 12pts.

The exception to this is with 1/4" sockets, where 12pt is relatively rare. But since the question regards 1/2" sockets, that's only anecdotal.

I gifted a friend Ko-Ken 6 point 1/2" drive chrome deeps (the 10-22 set plus 16 and 18 to fill in blanks) in March. Nice satin finish down near the square drive end. Nice stuff; would buy again.
