I need a 6x7 Door.

So.... I have a dumb problem. When I built my shop about 5 years ago, I put a 6x7 roll up door on the back of the building for the lawn mower. I really hate that door, it's one of those storage unit type doors. I want to put in a regular sectional door. Problem is, 6x7 is a custom size. I got a quote from the same company who installed the doors on the front of my building to the tune of $3100 installed. I'm not paying that much for a door! Any ideas?

Few ideas...Get another quote. Modify a bigger door to fit. Build your own. Change to hinged/sliding door(s). Reframe the opening for a bigger door.

6x7 would hold a French door pretty easily

I don't think you have Menards stores in your area but they list a 6x7 non insulated steel door on their website for just under $500, not including installation. https://www.menards.com/main/doors-...5est12radi4259120/p-1444433932868-c-12358.htm Other big box stores like Lowes may have something similar.

We don't have Menards here. I checked Lowe's and Home Depot, neither of them list a 6x7 door. I have not gone into the store yet and asked if they can special order one.

recently re; an all metal entrance door. They guy got on his PC and went through and found the basic door. Then he went through maybe a 15 item list of options. I didn't buy, but I was impressed at how helpful he was and the huge range of options available.

I found the custom option website for Home Depot and found the door to be $800. I can buy a 8x7 for $425. It's hard to justify spending almost double for a smaller door. I did a little YouTube research and found out it's fairly simple to cut a door down. I'm going to look at the door in the store (they are in stock at HD) and make sure it will look good when cut down. Thanks for the help all.

Agree with @billconner, check on a delivered price to your house. Otherwise see where the closest is located and make a road trip.

Harsh reality is both options will have some added costs. The question becomes can it happen for less than the $800 custom price locally.

IMO, 375 to get something that isnt going to eat up a whole day of disassembly, modification, reassembly, tweaking, painting, tweaking, etc seems like a good deal to me. I think cutting down a metal or fiberglass door will be far from simple

If DIY is an option do a you tube search on "bifold hanger doors"
hanger dooors are much bigger but the bifold style has been used in many sizes

also look in to hollow core metal commercial doors , they can do a french door set up with 2 man doors .

The suggestion of hollow metal with a knock down frame is a good option. 6' x 7' is a very standard size. Find your closest dealer and see what they can do. It's been too many years since I bought some but surprisingly low cost.

I don't know who quoted you what, but shop around. Also if you have winload requirements being that close to the coast, that's going to move the price up some. Regardless, that price is crazy. Most places should price that the same as an 8x7 with a small charge for being a non standard size. I would really like to see your quote if you have it. At the end of the day, a 6x7 is a common but not stock size for most people. Contact a small local guy. They will be able to take care of you.

Don't cut something down.

If you are a decent fabricator you could make doors to fit the hole. You can buy a big pile of 2x2x1/4 angle for $300+
