... i have an old 14" garner plug-in electric that i feel would work if it wasnt so dull ...

Go buy a new chain and drop off the old one to be sharpened !

When your done with your job at hand, swap chains and send that one out to be sharpened.

went window shopping today. hit home depot and they had a homelite 18 inch that worked for us because it had a spare chain and oil for $160. then we went to lowes and they had a poulan pro 18 inch for $170 with case (the husq sitting next to it had an optional case for $40, making us realize the benefit of $10 extra). finally, we hit menards and they had the 20 inch version of the poulan on sale for $180 (case also included). we know that if we can get the money around today we'll get the 20 inch but it remains to be seen what we'll get if we cant (the sale ends tomorrow). what would you get between the 2 18 inchers?

because of my laziness, and the 4000 series dremel i have laying around, i think i may pick this up to keep the chain sharp http://www.lowes.com/ProductDisplay...gId=10051&cmRelshp=req&rel=nofollow&cId=PDIO1

Personally I would steer away. You run the risk of removing too much material at the wrong angle very quickly. Besides using a file takes no more than ten minutes and it's a manly thing to do... PLUS lets say your out in the woods cutting for several hours and your chain starts to dull (I usually give mine a quick sharpen every tank of gas) .... It's alot easier to whip out the file than drag it back to the garage, get out your dremal, etc.

....a chainsaw isn't something you wanna be "lazy" with... They can hurt you real quick

i got that 20" poulan about an hour and a half ago. it made short work of everything i tried. i got home at about 6:40 and i was cutting by 7 o'clock. it came with a small bottle of 2 stroke oil, enough for 1 gallon but i bought a 5 gallon can so i bought a quart. i just remembered though, i for got to shake the can before fueling. will the engine be ok if i finish this tank? i didnt fill it all the way so it shouldnt take too long to empty. also, what is the verdict about leaving fuel in the chainsaw?

anyway, i got quite a bit cut but there is still tons more to do. my brother in law wants to have a go so i'm going to let him cut what's on the camper still tomorrow. i cut off the secondary branch in sections and started slicing up the main shaft (being careful not to hit the dirt), but i should have started at the other end because now it's going to be extremely difficult to avoid the dirt. at any rate, i'm having fun so money well spent!

You are ok. Shaking the can is something everyone does, but I doubt it matters. The oil does not seem to separate or anything. Someone on another [chainsaw] forum poured some mixed fuel into a glass jar and let it sit on his workbench a long time. He never saw any separation at all. If it bothers you, pour the remaining fuel out of the saw and replace with shaken fuel. By the way, you'd have likely known the engine was damaged within a few minutes of running it, so you are fine.

As to the 5 gal. container, you should mix up only what you anticipate using for the next month or two. Less if you are in a humid region. Unless you have gas without ethanol. The alcohol is hygrophobic and attracts water molecules from the air and makes a mess of your gas. I live in a very dry area and have no problems for many months, but that's here. If some of the limb is lying in dirt, raise it up a smidgen with a 2 x 4 or something to get it off the ground. Or, cut it part way through and roll the limb over to finish the cut. Dirt will dull the chain in about a tenth of a second.

Every tank or two of gas used, flip the bar over top to bottom so it'll wear evenly and you'll get more life from it.

thanks. i'm well aware of the effects of water on alcohol based fuels. i used to have a couple nitromethane powered rc cars and i have read some horror stories of engines gummed up from leaving fuel in an engine for as little as a week. i never experienced any ill effects and after this branch is fully cut, there are at least 4 trees that are coming down. i'm pretty sure i'll use at least half this fuel. as easy as thing was to prep and start and the power this 50cc engine has, we may be getting a string trimmer and either a tiller or cultivator later this summer, so that'll help consume this fuel too.

I can't believe all the answers but I guess thats what you get ,go buy a round saw file that fits your electric s chain and a sharpening gauge and file the chain on your electric and get the branch off your camper!!!!

i'll quote my sister "that;s not a branch, that's a tree!" that electric wouldnt have worked even with a brand new professionally sharpened chain. the poulan i bought had troubles at a couple points.

i had my brother in law come out and help with moving the branch (i couldnt move it, it had to weigh over 500 pounds, i wouldnt be surprised if the whole thing weighed over 2000) and cutting it up. after we got it cut into more manageable pieces, we decided to cut down the pine behind the garage. i was a bit dumb and decided to skip cutting the wedge... so after my saw got stuck he wailed on it with the ax and after a few minutes it fell. onto the garage. luckily it was close enough and had enough (surprisingly springy) branches that no damage was done. so he climbed up on the roof and cut off the branches and pushed it off. he had to leave so i cleaned up what was in the driveway (he threw all the branches in front of the carports) and decided to go around back and cut up the trunk. after that, i put all the tools away and came in to sit down (the longest i've sat was at most an hour waiting for him to get here). i plan to go back out tomorrow and cut the pine some more and to cut the branch into even smaller pieces to split. i wouldnt be surprised if he comes back to help. might see about a bon fire on the 4th of july.

I had a Poulan saw once, I gave it away for parts. I swear it lived up to it's namesake, because that's what you did to get it started.
