I need a great basement dehumidifier

This is my answer from a crawlspace which holds true to basements.Dehumidifier from box stores do not have a certified rating. AHAM is the professional rating system.If you will be using your dehumidifier in a tough environment with very damp conditions, look for a dehumidifier with your recommended pint capacity tested at AHAM conditions (average humidity conditions of 60%) instead of saturation (100% humidity)​. A model able to remove 70 pints of water when the air is saturated, for example, is much less robust than a model able to remove 70 pints of water at AHAM conditions. A good RH in crawlspace is between 45-50% to keep mold at bay. High humidity flows to low humidity.

Works great......i would never spend more than $100 on one

The only obvious catch..........to used.........it has to work, otherwise you just bought someone else’s hazardous waste........that actually costs money to get rid of properly.

For $100 or so you can by a new one at Menards witha warranty.

I got this AlorAir a year ago for about $530 for my 1500 sf unfinished basement. It has been excellent, no more rust, mold, or mildew problems. My air handler is also in the basemen, so I have the gravity drain piped into the existing condensate pump.

Basement size is the most important thing while choosing a dehumidifier. Like me i use this AlorAir HDi90 for my large basement. It's a heavy-duty dehumidifier can extract up to 90 pints of moisture per day while the integrated pump will help get rid of it wherever your drainage is.

You have a basement in San Jose? If so you are one of the few. And why a dehumidifier?

I've been battling the humidity in my crawl space under my house. Was having very high humidity to where everything was wet under there. First I put a sensor push under there to see what was going on.

Next I started installing 12 mil vapor barrier under the house, with joints taped. Next I installed an alorair sentinel hdi100. Really knocked the humidity down further. The last step I did was to spray foam the rock walls around the perimeter of the inside of the crawl space.

Below is the temp and humidity of the crawl space since last Jan. Think I've done pretty good getting it under control.

I keep a portion of my library in my basement, and dehumidify to 45% to keep any foxing at bay. That's worked for me for many years.

I also run a gentle fan full-time to keep the air moving in the room, boosting the circulation provided by my dehumidifier. It's kind of empirical, but my belief is that also helps quite a bit. I do the same in my garage and it helps reduce corrosion in that non-dehumidified outbuilding.

This is partway through building the IKEA Ivar shelves. They're completely filled now.

I put an aprilaire unit in my crawl and it's working great. In the garage, I have a portable midea that is doing well, but I don't have a great way to set it up to auto drain, so it's a PIA to empty regularly. Need to fix that
