Does anyone have a brand recommendation? The ones on Amazon look like junk from reading the reviews. A quarter ton is fine. I need to lower some 120 pound inverters off the wall and then put them back up again.

Thanks

I have a couple of the AMH hoists from Harry Epstein. I’ve been pretty happy with them.

Don't ask.
Harbor freight has a 1/4 ton lever hoist. Their 1 ton chain hoist is about the same cost. If you don't need it to hold the load in place a block and tackle would be small and cheap (you could tie it off to hold).

Harry Epstein carries good stuff, but a chain hoist from Harbor Freight is a fraction of the cost. While I always advocate quality over price, for light duty and occasional use it's pretty hard to argue against an HF chain hoist.

This stays behind my seat all the time. Unbelievable how handy it is. It has well exceeded its 500 lb. capacity many times.

Thanks. I’ll check out Harbor freight. I didn’t know they carried the little ones. My little block and tackle is difficult to use in this space. I probably need to upgrade it. The challenge is the inverters needs to go fairly high up on the conex wall. Space is at a premium.

Not wanting to make a trip to town, I ended up finding a couple of double pulleys and made a set of fours. They only took up about 6” from the attachment point. It worked well enough. I was able to get these heavy bastards to within 6” of where I I needed them. Then lifted on my shoulder to hook the cleat. A little dicey but no harm done yet. 2 are up and more to go. Time for a break.

One technique I use is to thread a short piece of allthread in place of one of the mounting bolts. Then you can lift the part up and slip the hole over the allthread and let it take the weight while you move the part around to install the other bolts. In the end, unscrew the allthread and put the last bolt in. Sounds trivial but this is a good trick I use more and more as I get older.

4 pull blocks can mame work a lot easier as long as you have the headroom and don't get two blocked.
Our 4 pull blocks at work make quick work of lifting 50kva transformers with 3 guys pulling. Probably around 700 lbs.
Of course nowadays those guys drive a tracked mini boom truck in the backyard. Fits in a 3ft gate.
I'd wager that young guys have no idea what blocks and tackle are.

Sounds like bluedog made his tight lift already but for low clearance lifts one of the surplus WW2 bomb hoists are well...the bomb! These work just like a rod and reel and have a 1/2 ton capacity. You just need a hook above the load to attach the end of the rod. I still see these once in a while at swap meets for less than $100 and they are perfect for these types of lifts. On ebay they want a lot more. I frequently have use for mine. Ed.
