I NEED A NEW AIR COMPRESSOR

I had this
Campbell Hausfeld Air Compressor 5HP
AIR%20COMPRESSOR%20005_zps5ekswyzw.jpg

AIR%20COMPRESSOR%20006_zpscbdgoau7.jpg

was working great till tonight I heard it leaking and found a small pin hole in the bottom of the tank.
8.6 @ 40 PSI
6.8 @ 90 PSI
125 PSI MAX
worked great for what I do,but when I bought it 19 years ago I knew I wanted to go bigger, but just never did.
worked great but I had to wait on the compressor to build up when running big tools (sandblasting...ect..)
so I am looking to step up a bit.
..so what do I get??
I'm looking at these.

I like the multicylinder ones.

Definitely get multi cylinder or multi stage.

Not sure if you have northern tool up there but in general big box store products are made more cheaply than smaller independent stores so the quality is eh...

Two-stage is an ENORMOUS plus.

There are some higher-pressure single stage (150-ish psi) that would be acceptable.

Air tools with normal quick couplers and typical hose lengths don't run worth beans when the compressor can only manage 125 psi in the tank.

I had the same thing happen to my old 60 gallon compressor. It is now a big **** smoker and I upgraded to a bigger 80 gallon industrial model. It runs quieter, less often and overall is leaps and bounds better than my old compressor.

I am looking for a stand up tank though because I saved the old pump.

The best= Quincy, very good quality = Champion. Watch your pump rpm, higher rpm equals more noise, more water, less life.

I have the middle one, but mine is green and came from Tractor Supply. Same pump and everything but on a 60gal tank. Ive been very happy with mine. Had it for nearly 10 years now. Did have to pull one head off the the pump last year. Had a head gasket start leaking. Easy fix. Follow the startup directions. Supposed to run it with the tank open so it cant build pressure for 30 minutes IIRC. Then change the oil again.

Have you looked at eaton compressors? For the same price as the bigger dewalt you can have a quieter, slower running and longer lasting. Also the electric motors are industrial quality.

Mine is quiet enough to talk on the phone right next to it.

I bought a 3 cylinder Eaton compressor about 15 years ago and I still use it. You are correct, it is very quiet. This was after my wife bought me a Craftsman compressor that was so loud I had to put it outside and then I took it back.

I think one of the 80 gallon Huskys is on clearance at HD. Check the prices at your local stores and watch inventory levels. You can get them for dirt cheap. Only problem is they can all get cleared out in one day if a big drop occurs and you miss it.

Everything said is good advice. I'd opt for as large as I could afford, buy it new with warranty, two stage and good final tank pressure when full. It's always better to have more compressor than you think you need rather than work a border line unit to death trying to keep up with your needs, past, present and future. Of course, an auto tank drain is a must.

Check the pressure rating of that tank before you decide on an operating pressure. My father had one rupture and it took out the entire corner of his building.

Craigslist is your friend.
An old industrial compressor will be less than one of those Chinese HD units.
Saginaw? you should be able to find one in a week.
I was born there long ago, 1949.

well I broke down and got this yesterday.
I had a heart to heart talk with myself, and at 53 I really do not see the need for the bigger compressor .
so I got about what I had before.
it will do what I need i to do.
and it is quite while running.

Single stages are great if you get one large enough and install enough storage. Lower PSI saves on electricity costs too. Milton V type connects would make more of a difference than PSI in your tank.

That's good news. It takes 19 years of not draining water to ruin a tank. Air compressors are tough. Can you imagine what that would do to a car?

Last year, I bought a Sanborn 60 gallon, 5hp at Menard's for less than $400. It replaced one exactly like it that I had bought 40 years ago. It developed a leak in the tank bottom. I used that compressor for painting, sand blasting, sanding, cleaning etc. That's why I bought the same one again.

well it was not 19 years of not ever draining it,just not on regular basis.
funny a few months before it developed the leak,I added a check valve to make it easy to drain the water.

first thing I did on the new one was add the check valve to drain the tank.
burned once on stupidity...not twice!

Ouch. My post reads a bit harsher than when I typed it. Sorry.

For some weird reason, I like compressors too much. Over and over I hear the "suddenly developed a leak on the bottom" thing and I think its a shame.

Its not my compressor. Ill never see it. Nobody died.

You gotta admit. Forget Timex. Compressors can take a lickin, and keep on tickin.

i bought a CH remanufactured 3hp 60 gallon one years ago on a harbor freight sidewalk sale for $150. stupid cheap, never regretted it, but I did wear it out this year, and was tired of it never keeping up anyway. talking with dad, he said to look into Quincy's, as it was the best in his day in the 70's. Now I have 3 of em, and am addicted. Love the cool ones from the WW2 era have two 80 gallon ones, unrebuilt, and still run great, and quiet too. a 244 single stage 2cyl, and a 340 2 stage. 244 was a government auction for $210, the 340 was a local compressor guy updating, sold it to me for $400....both on 80 gallon tanks, the 244 with a 5hp dayton motor, the 340 with a 7.5hp Baldor motor. cant beat 'em, and easy (but not cheap) to work on. and heavy AF!

These are the Quincys that made them famous. (Deservedly so). The Quincys most people are buying are not the same class of machine.
