I need a new compressor or pump.

The pump on my compressor has been acting up for couple months now, sounds like its locking up. It's a 5hp 60 gal, single stage, and if I remember right it's only 12.4cfm@90psi. I have a decent sized sandblast cabinet I need to run. I found a new 2 stage pump on northern tool. My question is, would I be better off just trying to find a new compressor, or plumb this new pump in. Thanks.

If your old pump was 12 cfm, your motor isn't going to turn a 24 cfm pump. That pump would require a new larger motor, a motor starter, and likely other parts too.

I bought one of these pumps to replace my wore out pump.
They are off shore made. But it was cheaper then a new or used duel stage which is my next stop.

But this got me through paint and body work on my Falcon, and now doing a Dart for a friend.

Give them a call, the owner answers the phone and will steer you to the right pump for your motor size. Have the data from your motor handy.

That pump head will not work on your 5hp motor. You also need to determing if your motor is a real 5hp, determined by the amperage draw of the motor, of if it is a Sears 5hp.

I vote for looking for another compressor. In the long run I think you will be time, money and patience ahead.

Sorry for the delay, Its a GE motor, part# C-MO-7061.

I can get another 5hp/60gal for a good price. If I use the new compressor and plumb my existing tank to give me 120 gal, would that be enough to use my sand blaster without having to stop every minute.

How old is the existing ? If you are looking to replace why look at another 60 ? Go for a 80 .

I bought it used, probably had it 2 years now. I don't want to spend to much. I just bought a new welder, but I want to get something that will work good and not leave me needing something more.

If your current compressor will run for a minute and then you have to stop and you double the tank capacity then you can run for 2 minutes and then stop for twice as long as before. It all boils down to the capacity of the compressor to compress air. If it can't keep ahead of your tool then once your compressor kicks on the size of the tank doesn't matter.

If your running 1 minute and waiting 1 minute with the existing setup, doubling the tank volume will allow you to run 2 minutes and then wait 2 minutes. Bottom line is that you can only run the tool 50% of the time because that is all the pump is capable of.

You said you have a 5hp motor now. That pump says it requires 7.5 hp.

7.5 > 5

Therefore it won't work.

Actually, looking at the manual at the Northerntool site, it will run with a real 5HP motor at a lower RPM...

... but that's not a real 5HP motor.

That is true but he won't get the 24cfm that he was looking for. It is rated for 17cfm at the lower rpm. So it may have in fact run but it won't work like he wanted it to. But like i assumed before anyways he doesn't have enough motor for it anyways. Also it says that is a double pulley flywheel and he likely has a single now.
