I have a HF Die grinder that I've worn out. Took about 5 years of every day use though.

It's a 45* angled one.

Matco has one thats .5hp for $187
Snappy has one thats like .2hp for $155.

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item...roup_ID=675146&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

The HF one I have now replaced a MAC one that was absolute garbage and I got bent over w/o Vaseline on that deal. I'm not going to consider a Mac one due to that fiasco.

And the HF one is $25.

Are the truck ones that much better than the HF one? The truck ones do not have a lifetime warranty like hand tools do. The cost to rebuild them is more than the HF one cost.

Decisions, Decisions.

The gears in the head stripped. The motor and collar are still ok. The Mac one did the same thing but it was only days old.

The SO and Matco ones are from Taiwan. Possibly the same gears as the Taiwan made HF one? If so I don't see a reason to pay 8x as much.

I have a matco one that I've used for the past 11 or 12 years, but I also have a harbor freight one that I picked up recently. From what I've see of the harbor freight ones, seems hard to justify buying anything else

I bought a blue point 90 grinder as one of my first air tools and only thing I wished would have done is buy one that was a rubber grip. Run it long enough and that thing gets COLD. I just bought a MAC straight one yesterday and got to use it today. Very light, very nice feel in the hands. I got a 1 hp one though so I can double it as a cutoff wheel when I need to

I have been using my Harbor freight ones for years at the shop (both angle and straight). I have a spare one at home for when they finally decide to go. I just can't justify spending 150-200 for 1 die grinder. I can buy 10+ of them from Harbor freight when they are on sale.

The 45 degree angle complicates things. I just check my Sioux and Dotco catalogs and neither one of them has it.

I cant speak for the SnapOn die grinders, but have had a Blue Point 90 degree and I think it lasted about 8 years.

Consider getting another HF one. I just bought the right angle one for $10 w/ a coupon, and I have been EXTREMELY happy with it. I hope I get 5 years out of it.

I have had a HF one for over 10 years done a lot of work with it on cages and other projects and still working good. BUT I do not feel it may not have the power of a good unit it has the endurance. Mine will bog down easily I would like to have more power and last for ever like the HF one.

The bogging down may also be your air compressor. I feel like the cheap tools don't use air as efficiently as some of the expensive ones. My buddy had a snap on cut off tool and he used it at my shop, it was way more impressive than the one that I had with the same amount of air.

I agree the cheaper tools seem to use a lot more cfm, I have a 6 hp two stage at about 22 cfm plenty of and and pressure. The tool is the weak link.
