Hey Gang,
I did a quick search and didn't find much. I need a new garage door and would like to aviod the Home cheapo type. I'd like something insulated thats a little better quality then that.
Anyone have any sources or suggestions?
TIA
Rick

For the most part a garage door is a garage door. Just make sure you check the thickness of the steel. Most doors are 25 gauge steel while some of the upper end doors are 24 gauge.

My garage door guy installs the CHI brand of doors. I just had 3 installed model 2216. They have R-14 rating with sealed interlocking panels. They are a heavy door but move very smoothly. Their website is CHIOHD.COM.

I'm not affiliated anyway with them other than a satisfied customer.

I went with the Chamberlain Liftmaster openers on the two large doors. You can barely hear them operate and no jeking or framming around.

the nice thing about the Dalton I-Drive Openers is they dont have any unsightly tracks to see or install and there is no chain or belt to wear out or break.

I called CHI and a 8x7 door is $855.00 installed. I left a message at Dalton (no one there and no call back yet) but the dalton doors look a little nicer. I assume they will be more expensive. The R value of the Dalton is R10 vs R8 of the CHI Door. I have to go to HD or Lowes, I suspect I will find something similar to CHI?
I really like that I drive. My garage is finished (Sheetrocked Celing) and I have no room for a large type opener. I'll keep you posted.

The garage door will still have tracks and I have never ran across a belt or chain that has broken. Personally I would stay away from anything at Wayne Dalton especially the I drive. They have had nothing with problems with it for years do a google search for reviews and see what you come up with. We replace them on a regular basis with standard motors due to failure. Maybe they have them corrected but here in town WD uses Liftmaster openers.:headscrat

If I had to choose I would take the CHI door over the WD even with the lower R value. The hardware will be better and the steel will be much thicker on the CHI.

I have the insulated Clopay's from Home Depot and am very happy with them. They were about $348 each for a 9X7.

Wow,
Okay - thanks for the input guys. I gotta admit I didn't finish doing my home work yet, I've been too busy at work, but I gotta get this done soon (next week or two?) Good to hear on the CHI, FWIW the people were real nice with to deal with over the phone, but the price on the HD doors seems really reasonable. Only problem would be with installation, I would have to do it myself I don't trust the HD installers.

Okay, the Wayne Dalton door is $1,600 installed. The I-drive is $450 installed. granted the door I picked out is a 9700 so we are not comparing apples to apples.... let's see what the HD is...

Agree. Well built product. I went with three of the "premium" line door, which is insulated and is double sided steel.

http://www.clopaydoor.com/premiumsteel-construction.aspx

HD can special order for you anything in the entire Clopay catalog.

I found that none of the local garage door guys could come close to HDs pricing for the same door, which, as it turned out was installed by a local garage door company, working under contract from home depot, anyway!

I have a low celing height above the door as well. It could make installation a problem, especially if I'm installing an opener as well. Well, I'll get the door installed first.

How many inches do you have from the top of the opening to the ceiling or obstruction?

I'll have to measure to be exactly sure but check out the pic. I think that's a 8" header with a 2x4 on top and bottom. So I guess it's 10 or 12"?

You will want to make sure what you are wanting to do before the door goes in if you are wanting to use an opener. With only 10" it will be hard to use a standard torsion setup without low headroom track. We have fit doors in with 8" of headroom and torsion with a standard opener, but a Liftmaster jackshaft will not work with low headroom. As it looks now an opener will not fit, if you went to low headroom track it would but the door cost will go up a little and you will want to order it that way from the beginning.

You know what, the door just clears scraping the ceiling as you raise it. I'm pretty sure I'm hosed as far as a opener is concerned. Unless I can get the torsion type to work.

You can get an opener to work just plan for it before you get the door. Can you hook your tape on the top of the horizontal track and measure to the floor, and measure the ceiling height as well?

The Liftmasters have a low head adapter that drops the top of the opener below the cable drum for close clearance ceilings like yours.
