In process of building a 30x40 detached garage with shingles and vinyl siding to match the house. I am doing a bulk of the work myself as time permits. Roofing is not something I want to do - don't like heights and that is a BUNCH of labor. I have called a hand full of roofers in the phone book, asked around town, and am coming up blank. How do you guys go about hiring a roofer? I thought of driving around town and finding a roofing crew in process and ask them if they want some side work. Not sure how that would be viewed. Would like to have the roof done before it starts getting too cold. I am right outside of Elizabeth City, NC if anyone knows a roofer in the area.

It would be easier to find someone to lay tin on your roof. Not as labour intensive. I am doing my garage this way as the shingles i laid 20 years ago are pretty weathered.

Down here in Columbia I went by talk radio advertising. Talk show host was bragging all the time about this one company. I had a leak in my roof around a vent stack. They came out, cut off the base of a cap and slid it over the top like an umbrella since mine was just dry rotted and cracked at the top. Didn't charge me a dime and told me I'm going to need a new roof within 5 years, just call them back.
2 years later we got hit with a major hail storm in the area. It was amazing all the roofing companies that showed up all of a sudden, but that are gone now. I went with my guys that were here long before the storm, and they are still here 4 years later.
Find someone that is in your area, and has been a long time. Now that the Yellow pages are a thing of the past, I would suggest some internet searching is in order.

5 seconds on Google provided my 15 roofing companies in your area. Cross reference with the BBB and start calling!

several sites can connect you with contractors
Angie's list
homeadvisor

for smaller jobs: Amazon home services has worked for me.

I used Angie's list for window replacements and got 3 people out of it that were all respectable and fairly priced. Home Adviser didn't help me at ALL when i needed some concrete work done.
