I need a set of long drill bits..

My drill bit drawer is severly lacking some long drill bits (metal cutting)...What do you guys have and/or recommend? Where's s good place to buy them, or order them? I only found long wood bits on the HF web site..Thanx in advance, the T-man...

Any industrial supplier will be able to get them. If you are going to order online look at places like McMaster carr, epsteins, enco, kbc etc.

How long? I have some 18" twist bits I use for running wire, HD sells them.

Good question....I think about 10" -12" would be good....Maybe a few sets...Maybe 1 set about a foot, and a second set about 16" or so...

use-enco.com or mscdirect.com are the best places to buy IMO, but you'll be hard pressed to find the smaller sizes in 10-12" in a metal cutting bit.

I have fairly complete sets of both fractional and number in 6 n 12" I've purchased through eBay from industrial liquidators for five cents on the dollar compared to new. Then I filled in the missing sizes from enco when they have their sales. But if you're looking for a instant deal, I'd suggest enco, just watch for some kind if sale.

What is the difference between aircraft and taper bits?

I use Irwin "aircraft" bits for drilling holes in steel box tubing sometimes so you can get it straight, I believe you can find a set, Ive just been using a few singles I had. I have been happy with them, though I havent put them through really heavy use I wouldnt say. They were reasonable to buy.

The aircraft manufacuting industry uses jobber lenght, 6 inch, and 12 inch in mostly sheetmetal (Aluminum). Sizes #40, #30, #21, #10, 1/4". You might try a search on aircraft tools.

I have a 12 inch set from Enco, they are made by interstate, they are chinese made, but with my 30% off coupon they were like 80 bucks(currently on sale also), retail on the set was like 300 something.

Enco is a good place to start. Request their catalog and once recieived they have a fairly detailed section in the front of the drills that breaks it down of how/when/where to use what kind/style/make of drill.

The extensions can be used individually or in combination for all sorts of situations. Just a thought.
