I should update a bit, I think you need 4 or 5 containers with just the right configuration to get what I've done. I didn't realize I had as many apparently.
Ok so first off, here are all the containers I could find that came with bits in them.
Here's all the stuff inside the relevant ones. Note there are more bits in the others but they're mostly irrelevant. I made this one bigger so you could see how/what I put in them. Believe it or not the black oxide spiral bits came in two sets, although I think you can get them in one set now.
Notice also that the longer 2" bits, they make two different inserts to accommodate nut drivers and adapters, if you only want bits you're wasting space with the 5's when you can get 8's. But in all those cases I got only two.
This is the way I usually carry bits. I keep the dewalt cases in my bag, and anything I will need besides PH2 or SQ2 I put in the
round one and into my pocket. Each of the compartments on it can hold 10-15 bits and one of the tape holders on my tool belt is big enough to go through it (it is a little awkward but it hangs just as well on a bucket-pocket-thing). So for $3 each you can carry more 1" bits in smaller space than these Dewalt cases anyway.
Usually I keep the PH2 & SQ2's in the gum container. Great way to carry them, fits in a cup holder and they taste better than gum (I hate gum)
The one you describe from Lowe's is not a terrible price though I think if you're patient you can get the equivalent amount of bit holders separately for $5-10 less.
For example here is your
100 pc set at Lowe's with 7 of the 1" bit inserts. Here is a
45 pc set that has 4 of the 1" inserts, so for the same price you can get 8 of them.
And you get two of the 8-holder 2" bit inserts.
Also, for the fun of it, you can't see from the picture but Bosch sells a set of bits that are
both SQ2 & PH2 in one tip, and it comes in a 'tic tac' style case. They aren't perfect, but they're great for the price & convenience. I got them at Sears.
