Background: My SO and I own a house we really like. However, the general saying around here is that it was built in the early 70s by monkeys using duct tape. We have replaced almost every system -- but that's another story.

I have a leak from a 2 inch drain line under the floor where the sink is and above the store room sheet rocked ceiling. The leak is from the joint between a "y" fitting and the pipe. Not a strong leak, it just drips. I know how to fix it right, but I'm not willing to tear down half of the house to do it. I cut a hole in the ceiling and I can see pipe and reach it with difficulty. There is really no pressure on this joint. Water just drops out of the sink and goes on its way.

Anyone know of a waterproof wrap that would work. Sort of like the muffler tape we used in the old days. The other solution is to leave the blue bucket there on the top shelf; that's just too redneck.

No pictures either.

I would appreciate your suggestions.

The blue bucket isn't redneck. Installing a rain gutter to carry the water away to a drain is redneck...

Sorry I couldn't help you.

If you have enough room to wrap the pipe, can you cut out the bad section and install a Fernco coupler?

Let it dry, rough it up with sandpaper and seal it up with JB weld - won't ever come apart again though...

Marine-tex. The white stuff will happily stick to a pipe, even if it's wet.
Much more appropriate here than JB Weld.

Or, I've got some epoxy putty from Belzona that can plug a gas tank leaking from a bullet hole.

It it was me, I'd do it right. Get your self a few slip cuplinks and a y and glue it up. If you can't find the slip type you could dremel out the ring in the middle. Save the rednecking for another day. Trust me you wont regret doing it right. There wont be that lingering wonder of, if it's gonna leak tonight.

It's in an area above a sheet rocked ceiling, I would take the time and effort to fix it right.

Since you mentioned the Monkeys -- We've been in this house for about 7 years. One day in the first couple years the lumber company truck was backing across the lawn to deliver stuff for my motorcycle shop. A piece of white PVC popped up from his wheel. Turns out that was my leach field, two 10 foot pipes on a "T" joint. The terracotta flue pipe from the wood stove cracked or was cracked and set the wall behind the stove on fire. The cricket for the fireplace chimney wasn't flashed properly; my SO woke up about 2am with water dripping on her head.

The list goes on. We are really happy with the house now.

BTW: I'm going to use "plumber's epoxy" on the leak. It's really just a drip and only leaks when the sink drain line plugs up because the line wasn't put in with enough of a pitch (or it's just sagging). Not a big bother and I am on a first name basis with the Roto Rooter guy.

They make a silicone self-bonding (sticks to itself) tape. My Grandmother used some on a sink drain where is hooks uo to to the basket(? I think, drain line anyway) and so far, so good. One of them "as seen of TV" deals. Probably just a quickie fix though.

clear silicon aviable in small tubes at any hardware store. As a plumber by trade you would be amazed how many leaky sinks are fixed with this. Not always the right way to go it but it gets it done fast and cheap. Most customers like that.
