When I needed a punch longer then I had on hand I used socket extensions with deep well sockets and tape.

Punches are not cast, they are forged, generally from a fairly ordinary carbon tool steel, then hardened and temperd.

A longer length will need to be thicker than what you typically see to avoid bending is use.

I would probably buy 3' of 4140 pre hard steel in 3/4" or 1" dia and use that.

That was gonna be my question as well. Are you gonna be tapping on a pin in an inaccessible location, or whaling on a long 3’ long pin to drive it out of a huge arm?

i got a freeze plug that blew and only way to get to it is over the tire into the fender well, cant get it to flip. Im using a form pin right now.
the plug is under the exhaust manifold and beside the engine mount, so I got like a six inch window. the steering shaft is also right there. if i can get the plug to roll then it be done with

Well, it's certainly reducing the peak force level, since it's acting like a stiff spring. Either increase the diameter of the rod, or hit it w/ a bigger hammer. The other less dramatic approach is a freeze rod puller:

I think by roll, you're trying to bump one side loose so it rotates in the bore. Good plan. A long piece of steel should do it. If you match the edge of the plug so your "punch" sits against the top edge, that should be effective.

I use a deepwell 1/2 drive socket that fits snugly inside the frost plug and enough extentions to where I can gently but firmly drive it in with a drillers hammers. I first lube it up with aviation form-a-gasket.


Edit just noticed you are trying to remove not install. I use a chisel welded to the end of a chunk of rebar for that. If you can't get it to "flip" then pound a hole in it with the chisel and use a slide hammer to remove.
