Well I've given up searching CL. I need a 5-6" vise with a decent jaw opening.

Help me out. Looking at new or used on eBay or in store.

Prefer to stay away from China but if I have to, I'll do it.

Something like this:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wilton-Shop...661861359?pt=Clamps_Vises&hash=item4600d7ebef

or this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-30-...577?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a70432071

or maybe this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/VISE-LITTLE...&otn=5&po=LVI&ps=63&clkid=6339065865910673000

or this new from my local Sears:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00951888000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1#reviewsWrap

or this from Home Depot:
http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc...Id=10053&langId=-1&keyword=vise&storeId=10051

Although I do prefer something with a *********** though, that one from HD seems pretty shallow.

I just don't know. The Sears it the only one that lists tensile strength and it's 60,000 which is the recommended from what I've been reading. But for $110 after coupon I wonder what else I can get, if I go China I could get a cheaper one locally though from Harbor Freight or Home Depot.

Have you tried an industrial auction or the local scrap yards, or better still a scrapyard that also deal in surplus? Pawnshop? auctions? estate sales?

I wouldn't consider a HF vise as I've seen to many of the the cheap import vises broken.

If you must go new import, stick with Wilton's or Sears as they will at least TRY to get them to a standard, (But for how much longer, who knows? Walyworld mania has take root deeply in mainstream retail...)

The pawnshops around here sell their goods for more than you can buy new in store and not really any good stuff in there. Mostly junk old tools. Same with the flea market, it's total ****.

Estate sales are hit and miss I work mostly weekends so no chance for the good stuff and the few I've been to were asking way too much for used Chinese vises.

The 4.5" Craftsman pro vise is probably the best deal going for a good inexpensive vise. It's a Wilton clone , (likely made by them) and from what I've seen very well made.

It's probably one of the few items I'm looking at buying from Sears anymore.

I'm looking for something currently available, auctions that ended aren't much help. Any links to current ebay auctions that you would recommend?

After going through the same dilemma as you I bought the 6" Irwin that is in your Home Depot link. I am very impressed with it so far (almost a year). I routinely use it for bending horseshoes and hammering on them for my horseshoe art that I do. BTW, it has a lifetime warranty. I continue to watch CL and flea markets for a deal on an old Wilton or Columbia but the Irwin will still be used as a secondary vise. JMHO.

If you can spare the time, wait until you find a good deal. I just got this 4-1/2" one off of Ebay for $76.

Although when I got it, it looked like this:

Still, I have less than an hour of refurb and paint in it so far.
