I need a vise

I need a vise. I'm starting to get my garage in shape for a decent (albeit small) work area. I'm seriously frustrated with my $hit HF vise and would like something made out of good ole American iron. I'm willing to give a few sets of Knipex alligators; one practically new, new style wider opening jaws with standard grips, the other well used ole style with comfort grips, and some cash. Please let me know what you have, it doesn't have to be very large; maybe 3.5" to 4.5" and it needs to be a USA piece.

Thanks,

c4

i have two athols, one is a swivel and in great shape. i would take around 30 cash, pliers, and shipping for it, but its not the best deal as its around 70lbs and im in central nj.

i also have a 4.5 athol fixed base, its in rough but good working shape. i would take pliers and shipping for it. its not pretty, but it works. i can send pictures if you want.

i also have a smaller littlestown vise, in perfect shape, again 30plus shipping and pliers(fits in a medium flat rate box)

I'd keep my eyes on CL, there are a bunch that seem to pop up on there. I make a pretty regular run up there for tool deals. I'm In Colo Spgs and will keep my eyes open for you. I might also see if there are any in the squad that just dont quite match. Welcome to the board. Congrats on the new garage too. I'm rocking a long narrow 1 car myself. Looking forward to what you do with it!

Trust me... been there. My searchng for about a month led to a recent (probably chinese) Craftsman 3 1/2" for $75, a late model Athol which i couldn't get the buyer to verify was USA made for $100 "new", or a wilton 4" 75 miles away for $40.

Yes, I was lazy and the Wilton sold, and yes my man card was almost set ablaze by my old man...

Why make it harder for yourself? I have a real professional Wilton 5" I can do for $135 shipped. Maybe better if you are not in Cali.

Thanks to all that replied and PMed. I was lucky and found a decent Wilton locally that I want to try an spruce up a bit.

I found it at a neat little second hand store. It's called Charlie's Second Hand Store in downtown Denver and I would recommend anyone who digs old and unique tools that happens to be in the Denver area go check it out. Here is their website.

Here is the picture. It's a little rough, I know but I think a good deal for only $20. A little time with a wire wheel (or a lot), some paint, and maybe a set of replacement jaws if I can find them and it should be good to go...

Well in case anyone was wondering... here is the final product.

Now here's the good part. You'll notice at the beginning of this thread that my intent for finding a new vise was to get something US made to replace my HF Chinese piece that I was not too fond of. Now after doing a little searching back then I found the Wilton you see above. I was a little hesitant to pick it up because I'm not a fan of the open thread design but I figured "what the heck, it's a Wilton".

Now this morning I did a little more snooping to find out about the particular model I bought, and what do I find? Yup, it's Chinese. So after looking for a vise and "restoring" it I basically ended up right where I started off, just minus $25 and a few hours. Oh well... lesson learned.

That is similar to the "wilton" sold or used to be sold at the homodepot. If you want a bullitt style Wilton, keep your eye on CL....

I believe Home Depot or Lowes now sells rebadged Chinese **** with the Wilton name on it. Kinda like when Walmart bought Schwinn... Live and learn. Good luck in your search.

I have a Wilton 4" bullet w/new jaws-all re-done. If interested pm me for a price & pictures. I'm interested in ratchet swaps or cash or? Shipping is the big deal on vises-unless you can dis-assemble and put in flat rate box/boxes.:headscrat

That bullet is missing the swivel base.

Swivel bases are optional when you buy a quality vise. Kind of like power windows in case you did not realize.

To the OP, ya should have helped me help you and snagged my real Wilton when I was selling it. I will keep and eye out for you. I passed on a new good size Record (made in England) for $50. It was about 50 pounds of English steel. To me better than Wilton, just no re-sale value and I don't need one for myself.
