I need a weight ( Ton ) recommendation for a service jack.

Im looking at buying a service jack. I dont know which brand as of yet, but I need help on what Ton to buy the jack in... Im going with 12T jack stands ( over kill, yep ).

The truck is a 2006 f250 SD power joke, I mean stroke :shocking::lol_hitti:

Anyway, what tonnage would you recommend for a service jack?

I would look for ato 3 ton jack.
I use both my 2.5 and 3 ton to lift similar and even bigger trucks and have never had any issues. Your usually never lifting more then one corner of a truck that size at a time anyways.

For my 95 ram 2500 4x4 I have the HF 4 ton rapid lift ( and 6 ton stands ) very happy with the jack. plus it goes low enough to use on my 89 civic.

3 to 3 1/2 ton. Buy a quality jack. In my opinion most of the chinese jacks are over rated and the quality american jacks are under/conservativly rated.

3ton HW, would be nice, not only for the extra lifting capacity, but more so for the extra lifting height capability that could really come in handy on a high vehicle with large jack stands. :beer:

If you want to get technical, find the curb weight and multiple x.75 then divide by 2000 and you will have the Tons needed to lift half of the vehicle at once. Most cars have a 60/40 weight distro. The 75% give a bit of safety margin.

Thanks guys but for as little as I would be using the jack, I cant justify 500$ plus bucks on a jack.

If you think you'll be a lifetime gear head, DIYer or pro tech then make the investment on the Hein Werner. I know they're expensive but they are tough, dependable and serviceable jacks with an undisputed reputation for durability under daily shop use.

If I could have all the money back I've spent lesser jacks I could have bought two 3 ton HWs by now.

Thanks I will look into the HW and Napa 3-3.5T jacks.

Cant find anything... maybe Im just not using the right key words? Whats the brand that makes the Napa? Chinese?

I have used a cheap 2 ton jack and 2 ton stands for many years on diesel trucks, tractors, you name it. I have 20t bottle jack if the need arises for working on a semi.

That said a cheap jack now is not likely the equivalent of a cheap jack 20 yrs ago.

The number for the 3 ton Hein Werner is HW93652. It's one of the only USA made jacks left. I'll link you to one in a few when I can get on a PC.

Look at the Arcan 3.5 ton jack that Northern Tool sells. It's received excellent reviews (even here at GJ). It's low to fit under cars and such, but it also has a pretty high lift height...what you want for your truck. It's normally around $159...but I got mine for $109 earlier this year on sale. Works great on my 3/4 and 1-ton trucks!

Edit: You might find that 12-ton jackstands are too tall for 90% of the work they are used for. I've only used mine once to support a truck with a 4" lift behind the cab so I could swap axles out from under it.

A 3 ton jack will lift your HD (or SD since it's a ford) but they are small and won't lift very high. If you plan on working on lifted 4x4s it probably won't reach. I would recommend a 5 ton for trucks.... If only for the extra size rather than capacity!

Still quite a bit less than $500+ like most places. When I go to buy a floor jack, this is what I'm getting no matter how much it is. I've had a cheap jack give up with me under a rig, and the cheap jack stand almost went as well. It skeered the **** out of me, and I don't ever want to be in that situation again. :willy_nil

Yeah it's just weird that it went up so much in that short of a time period. I wouldn't know this if I hadn't just bought one a month ago and that website had one of the best prices shipped I could find.

Thanks guys. I thought the chinese jacks were hands down 10x better then they were a bit ago? I mean you cant beat the price of the HF 3T... Trust me Im 100% sure when it comes to hands tools. But a jack just lifts it up and then its on jack stands... Does the cost exceed value on a USA vs. chinese junk?

Two schools of thought:
1. You're lifting something and working underneath so DO NOT SKIMP HERE.

2. All it does is lift the vehicle onto jack stands, so it doesn't matter if it fails because YOU ARE NEVER WORKING UNDERNEATH A JACK, the jack's only purpose is to allow you to get stands underneath the vehicle.

That's an over simplification and will most assuredly upset people on both sides, but thats the gist of it.

I'm in group 2 and love my HF 2 ton low profile/high lift jack. YMMV.
