I Need Air Compressor Help

I Pick Up a 60 Gallon Compressor at a garage sale for $20. it was missing the switch.
I bought a universal pressure switch. got it running... Sorta.
It'll run for about 5 min. build about 40 pound of pressure the the motor starts jumping and slowing down, until the motor will trip out.
the pressure switch is rated for 135#
now I'm not sure if i have a bad motor, or bad compressor.
IDK what to do now.
Please any suggestions would be apprenticed

Is the motor overheating? What size motor and pump?

You may have a bad check valve, look into it first

i changed the Check Valve still having the same issues... anymore ideas????

I have seen it many times that the pumps go bad on these 3HP 60 gallon big box store air compressors. If you take the belt off does the pump spin freely when its at 40 psi? What does the oil look like? Sometimes you take them apart and find broken rods in the oil... They were made cheap to begin with & then often poorly maintained (no oil changes, missing or plugged air filters, etc...)
