This is a great site! I have been reading for a while and I am very impressed with what I've seen here and with all the different garages. The pictures are excellent in quality and it has gotten me so motivated to finally get my garage to where it needs to be.

With that being said: I need cabinets for my 1 car garage that I do side work out of.
I went to Sears and my jaw dropped to the floor when I saw the prices($129-$279 each)for thier cabinets. :eyecrazy:

I would like to buy them rather than make them because I don't really have the time or patience to start another project, but I need to keep the price reasonable.
I need good looking plain cabinets w/locks that I can bolt to my wall.I would like them to be around 36" H x 20" D and I would like to be able to install more if needed next to one another so I can keep everything looking uniform and also to everything out of sight.

I need them to be on the wall because I need the floor space.

Thanks in advance.

I second the motion of looking for old kitchen cabinets. Look in the newspaper want ads, or if you have a local website for Craigslist, check there - people often remodel the kitchen and then sell off the old cabinets for cheap. Or, check with your friends and family. It seems like there's always someone doing some remodeling and they're just tossing out the old stuff, that's how I got all the cabinets in my garage. If you want locks on them you should be able to find something at the hardware store or Home Depot that you can put on the doors. http://www.craigslist.org/

Here in NC you can go to Habitat for Humanity and p/ up used cabinets for cheap. What I've been told is when the demo homes or buildings they will pull out anything useful and donate it to them.

I may get flamed for saying this, but have you looked at the 'assemble yourself' cabinets at Home Depot or Lowes? They aren't really all that bad. I have had them in a MX racing trailer for 4 years and they are still together and look fine - and they take a beating being in a trailer.

MXtras: No reason to flame ya for that. I used to work at Homerland, what you say is true, although the cabinets you assemble cost a bit more than the unfinished oak cabinets that they sell. If a guy does not have a lot of coin the unfinished are the way to go, But only if you cannot do the scrounge routine and get someones kitchen redo cast offs on the cheap or as I have, free. I like cabinets because the covers hide my untidy bits and pieces. If your primary concern is for strength,(stacking heads, intakes etc..) I would not get the unfinished cabinets from Homerland, I would either opt for heavier cast off as described above, or get some of the xtra heavy shelves sold at HD. My 2 bits!

I second this. Home Depot has a line of cheap, plain white garage cabinets, that are around $50 for a cabinet around the size you are describing and $100 for a 5ft high pantry style cabinet. No locks, but you can add one yourself.

http://www.millspride.com/whymp/productlines.cfm

They are similar (if not the same model) as the third model down on that page.

Pay close attention at the home centers... I picked up these "make it, take it" cabinets for less then 20 bucks, for everything...

The product line was being clearanced out. I also got matching wall cabinets for $4.00 dollars apiece... with doors...
just keep your eyes open.

You might find these of interest. They have a zillion sizes and shapes, hang on the wall and will hold up to 300 lbs each. Start small and add to whatever your long range plan is when you want and have $$ for more. I got mine from a local rep shipped to my house and totally installed for less than Home Depot, etc considering S&H, time and frustration to assemble, etc. http://www.garagestoragecabinets.com/ Great folks to work with!

What you are asking for is gonna cost money- no way around it.

If you consider wall mounted kitchen cabinets, that may open a few doors. Cheap, unfinished ones may be in the budget. Even cheaper are older cabinets replaced in a remodel.

Locks on cheap cabinets won't make much sense.

In the retail world, things change. The garage cabinet you buy today may not be available tomorrow.

If you really want to add on later, I would suggest a more industrial path for metal cabinets.

Very good quality manufactured in North Haven Ct. You can pick up right at the factory or have them shipped. The make cabinets, nut/ bolt bins & cases, toolboxes, tool carts and heavy duty worktables.

I used the Do-All cabinets found at local HD, Lowes, and Yard-Birds (local chain...just bought by HD  )

They are easy to assemble, come in a variety of sizes and configurations, and relatively sturdy, though you have to be a bit careful with shelf sag (particle board). The white melamine surface looks great in the garage...

Whatever you do DO NOT buy the Craftsman Wall Cabinets. They look good but they have no storage space at all unless you are just storing bottles of oil or other small things. My mom and I got my dad some last Christmas thinking they would be good storage, that wasn't the case once I put them on the wall. On the other hand, the floor standing Craftsman cabinet is AWESOME. So much storage space, looks good and reasonably priced. We have 2 of them in the garage..my dad has one for some of his power tools and other things and mine is purely for my auto detailing supplies!

Sears has nice looking cabinets. That's what caught my eye when I was in there checking them out. I agree that they're small because that's what I noticed when I open them...the shelves are limited.

Xheck with your local remodeling people in town that installs cabinets. You may be able to get a deal by being there and hauling away for them when they do a tearout, or you may be able to trade some of your labor helping out for the cabinets. Every town usually has one or two companies that do that type of work. Also advertise in the paper that you will tear out old cabinets for someone that is doing a remodel. That way you can get them before the remodeling company does. Just a few suggestions. :rocker:

I couldnt find anyone getting rid of any. I started looking at new ones and didnt like the price as well as I coudnt hide all my stuff in them so I built my own. Total cost was only a bit over 200 with all the hardware. I am happy with how it turned out.

mine I think I got from lowes. The two black boxs with the bow ties are shelfs with some plexy glass painted on one side and some hinges.

Very nice Stinky!

What material did you use? Did you work off of plans or make them up on your own? If you have plans, I'd like to know where you got them.
Thanks,
Jason

don't pay for used cabinets. be patient. no reason to pay for something that will be thrown out. when people remodel houses, no way they expect to get money for the old stuff.

Jason,
The shelfs are steel and I got them for free, After I put them up they worked fine but I didnt like all my small junk hanging out in the open, So I strarted thinking doors, but I wanted something cool. So I picked up some plexi glass cut to size drill for hinges cleaned and spray painted one side (inside) use the unpainted side to face out ,this gives a nice gloss
finish and the wont scrach off , then some magnets glued to the glass holds the doors closed

I finally got a chance to get over to Lowes and check out what they have for cabinets.I like the Black & Decker cabinets the best. I don't think you can beat the price for what they are. They have metal shelves and they are good looking and pretty heavy duty. The only thing they don't have are locks but I can always figure a way to lock them.

Here are the cabinets if anyone is interested for themselves.
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=79826-84396-17305309&lpage=none

Here are the other matching cabinets:
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=78067-84396-7270BE&lpage=none
http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=58142-84396-17330052&lpage=none

There is another cabinet in that style that has 4 drawers too but I couldn't find it on thier site. If you go to the store it's on display.
