I need some ideas.I've got a storage unit I rent monthly to keep my 64 Chevy in during the winter months.I keep odds & end in it during the summer.I want to put some sort of shelving in the front but I need to be able to get my car in so it can't go all the way to to floor because it pretty well fills it from front to back.Being a rental unit I can't attach anything to the walls or ceiling.I' m thinking maybe trying to hang something from the top or supporting it from the sides so I can get my car in.I'm having a brainlock on this one.:headscratAny ideas or pictures of what you guys have would be appreciated.

I've been in your shoes a few times (renting a storage unit) and my go-to solution is the bakers rack type shelving from Sam's Club. Tough stuff and it's on casters so you can move it around. The stuff is worth its weight in gold (IMHO).

That is what I use.

Bulk Storage / Pallet Racking. You can buy them used and they can be 12' wide.

How wide is your storage unit? Most around here are 12' You can pull the nose of your car under the first shelf of any that are 6'or more wide. They are usually 2',3.4' deep and can be 6' to 14' high.

Well worth the investment - and you can easily take them out when you move or change sites.

I agree with the pallet racking. You can use pallets as decking. A heavy screen mesh is also available. Or you can make decking out of wood. Easy up. Easy down. Easy to sell once you don't need it any more.

If you can't find anything used, Lowes sells a similar product that I bought for my basement. It comes in various depths & heights & the ones I have are 8'h x 8'w x 30" d. The shelf span is 8 feet, so a car will fit between the left & right, vertical pieces. I know 8' isn't the greatest for clearance, but it will work. You buy all the parts individually & have a choice of wire or particle board shelving.

Uprights:

Horizontal Supports:

The entire set up cost me about $275.00 or so, for two uprights, four supports for two shelves, wire racks, & the front to rear bracing under the shelves.

Get racking with the teardrop mount holes. The brand is Interlake. You'll be able to find this stuff for a decent deal and if you needed to sell it, it'd be easier since it's common and versatile. Most commonly, uprights come in widths of 30, 42, and 48 inches. The 48s are less common and therefore they can be had for a little less but also have a smaller market come resale time.

The beams come in 2 inch and 4 inch. You probably don't need 4" thick beams but the widths more than likely will dictate what you'll end up with. The difference, industrially is how much weight they can handle. We're talking more than you'll ever need to put onto those shelves.

The beam lengths, most commonly, range from 48" to 100". I've picked up a bunch of 100s, just recently, and the only issue (which is hardly an issue) is that you end up with 4" of space a sheet of plywood doesn't cover.

My 48" x 100" just installed and without wire rack on the uppers and plywood on the other shelving.

Note: I had to cut mine down to a managable 8' tall down from 14'. This also made me buy an eight foot ladder. It's made life A LOT easier.

30"ers for comparison.
