I would avoid 2x4s, those are for building houses, not furniture. If you want them to be super sturdy (workbench top) I would laminate 3/4 plywood to make inch and a half plywood to make the boxes so you have inch and a half uprights and top. Then put doors on it. Other than that "make them heavy duty" advice, there are a ton of cabinet making resources on line and at your local hardware store.

Off the top of my head I'd highly recommend the book "How to make Kitchen Cabinets" published by American Woodworker. That's one of my favorites.

On one of the cabinets I built it went like this:

It has a total of 4 deep drawers in it. I have stood on it and it doesn't move.

Another one, I built around some Steelmaster cabinets went like this:

Home Depot sells plywood sub-flooring (called I-link or something) that is 1" thick and 4' x 8' for $37. Makes for a pretty decent bench top.

These were all made with 3/4" plywood and 2x4". Used 3/4" pine for the face frames. I still have the tops to do to replace whats up there now. I have more pictures in my build thread. I tried to measure out all the cabinets to use all the wood. Not much scrape left..
