I was just going to bring up the composite ratchets. They are beast! They hardly ever come out of my box over a snappy, but they are very nice

TI highly suggest the craftsman industrial ratchets I just bought one for a buck never used and it's USA and supposed to be made of stronger steel than the regular

Who told you that tall tale?

They are/were produced on the exact same product line.

Go with the Gearwrench set that they listed above. I don't think you can do any better for the price. I have a TON of ratchets including all of the major truck brands, but more often than not, I grab the Gearwrench ratchets first.

Lots of good suggestions here, many toward which you can use those Amazon gift cards. My suggestion for the 3/8, however, would be to get yourself a used SK 45170 round head fine tooth ratchet. No, it doesn't have a million teeth head count, but is still considered by many to be one of the finest ratchets ever designed (there's a reason that same design has endured for many decades). They can be had on eBay for about $15 or so delivered. What's more, if you ever need to rebuild it, go on SK's site and fill out the form and they'll mail you a brand new rebuild kit no charge, no questions asked, in about a week. I'd even go with a used 1/4 SK RHFT also. Sorry to all the Craftsman fans, but I've used both and to me there's no comparison.

Hell you can still get the 3pc set of 160T Steelmans at $25 :)

The seller's legit.

I wouldn't call these everyday ratchets for me, but hey you said you wanted backups anyway! I think the 1/4" might be nice for most stuff if it breaks in and loses some backdrag. I've owned a 3/8" for years but it's kinda awkward. The 1/2" is massive - think murder weapon.

I love my old SK ratchets. I'm not saying I reach for them first, but I wouldn't want to be without them. I have never had a tougher ratchet! When things get dicey; the SK's come out...and always get the job done.

A Blackhawk 49945B: 1 lb 6 oz

A Craftsman 75T in 1/2" dr (anyone who's ever handled these likely considered them THE heaviest standard length 1/2" ratchet): 1 lb 13 oz

The 1/2" Steelman 160T: 2 lbs 0.5 oz!

Is more weight better? Nah. Just some useless trivia for ya

Yep, this.

Especially if you're concerned with price (get them used), having solid backups (may wind up being the main ratchets with the CMs for backup!) quality (no one ever dissed these!), longevity (style and COO doesn't change every three flippin' months, modern rebuild kits even fit old ones), and....USA! USA!. Hard to beat them. Switched all my main ratchets over to them. I have some old 3/8 + 1/2 Proto + Allenite type 'giant-head' pear-heads for cheater pipe stuff, have a 3/8 80T Snappy for the angelic experience fix (uuooh, Muffy, we're having caviar tonight, be sure you don't let the tradesmen in), but for day-in day-out down and dirty git it done no matter what without having to take out a second mortgage to pay for it, it's the SKs.

For the price I really like crescent ratchets. A little longer than cmans but way smoother with no backdrag.
