I need some deck ideas.

Hey guys,
I know this forum has a lot of talented people,
so all suggestions would be very much appreciated.
I have two areas that I think would look nice with a small deck. 1) Is between the garage and house. 2) Is on the south side of the house. I pretty sure I'll will go with the composite material. I've already spoke with the City Hall dude and he stated if it's below 30" no permit needed. I'm new to this, so please don't beat me up too hard if I left something out.

I would not build a deck. I would do a patio with those concrete based pavers, and the area that slopes down build up a mini retaining wall with some of the matching retaining wall blocks. There will be zero maintanance this way and no replacement of rotting wood in the future. If you decide to go this way, don't get the materials from a big box store, find a GOOD lumberyard or stone supply store as they will have a huge range of options that the other guys won't.

South facing deck may be too hot and sunny to use much.

I'm a carpenter and I still agree with Herb, a paver patio, done well, would work great.
