I need some drive axle help

I'm changing the drivers side drive axle on my 2002 MINI S with a 6 speed manual and cant get the last piece to separate from the gearbox. I can get a pry bar on it but I'm not sure that's safe. As you can see I have a rope around the back of it so I can pull on it but it won't budge. From what I've read it should just pull straight out but it's being stubborn. The pic of the new drive axle shows the part that's stuck. You guys have any tricks?

Second photo shows a lock (snap) ring, which is likely what holds it in the trans-axle. So a Google later, and yes, it is!

Go to http://www.reizendemoke.be/techniek/manual/fronsusp/13.htm and read that page, it has instructions and shows how to make the necessary tool.

Use a pry bar each side of the pot between the diff case and the pot.
Apply some pressure and out it'll pop.
Remember, you will lose transmission fluid so will have to clean up any spillage and replace any lost fluid.

Thanks for the reply nehog but I don't have the materials to make a tool like that.

Had a thought... Can I put it in neutral and pry from under neath a bit and then rotate that piece and pry from under neath again? Slowly turning and prying to walk it out?

If you have a wrecking bar like what is used in construction then fit it in where you can and give is a sharp POP. You can pull for hours. Push it in, set the pry bar and POP it hard.

If there isn't a core deposit on the shaft then you can take an air chiesel to it. Usaully you need an extra long chiesel to get around things.

You can also rent a slide hammer with an attachment to fit behind the cv but usually the wrecking bar works and the slide hammer is a poor second.

If you ever have to do both sides the safest way is one side at a time done complete ....
