I need some Electrical Advice...

is any one here familiar with magnetic motor controllers?..

Lemme esplain...

I have a FS Curtis compressor, with a unloader valve, pressure switch and of course a magnetic controller...

the controller has a selector switch for: Manual, Off, and Auto... the magnetic starter has failed... the coil... and since the mag starter is so old I fear that the coil will no longer be available....

so I' asking if I have to replace this magnetic starter inits entirety how do I select the proper Magnetic starter? and then wire it with the unloader and pressure switch?

No expert here, I think the mag starter is sized to the hp of the motor it's going to start.

The thermal overload switch inside is sized for your load. a new mag starter is $120-$140 Check surplus center and Amazon. I bought a square D thru Amazon there was a brief delay in shipping and the company then gave me free shipping and 20% of I think it cost me just under $100 after it was all said and done.

There's a few different things you'll need to know to pick out a new starter:

Motor HP Pick a starter with a HP rating equal to or greater than your motors HP

Coil voltage(most likely 240v) Take a look at your old starter and verify it's 240v

Thermal(heater element) size Look at your motors nameplate for the amp rating. Then multiply that by 115% and select the corresponding heater elements that are the closest match to that number. I typically go to a higher amp rating than a lower when I can't find a heater elements that's an exact match. Which is almost every time....

Remember, whatever starter you pick has to fit in that existing box. So don't go overkill on starter size and pick one for a 15HP when you only need a 5HP...

well I just looked the run amp is 25, the fla is 27.5 the mag controller is a dayton 5X152A.. I called grainger.. the part number is obsolete and non servicable.. so I'm in the market for a new unit...

The starter is a I-T-E sold under different names, I-T-E Imperial, Gould/I-T-E, & was sold to Telemechanique (sp), I think parts may still be avail from suppliers dealing w/ obsolete parts.

Beware of Amazon & others the starters are most likely built w/ a definite purpose contactor which are junk*, a Furnas/Siemens or a SQ D type S starter would be a good replacement.


*They are used by compressor manufacturers as OEM parts due they the fact they are cheaper & every penny counts when selling equipment & all they have to do is last until the warranty period ends.
