I need these tools identified

I picked these flexible T handle tools up at an auction this past Saturday.

The one set is made from aluminum for the T handle and the flexible body is made from a cable. The end of the tool has a sharp pig tail wire exactly like a cork screw

The 2nd set appears to be a bit older and is pretty much the same thing except the flexible body is made from a spring and is much more flexible than the cable set.

I'm thinking these 2 sets are a Plumbers extracting tool for unplugging clogs in drains but I'm not 100% sure.

Any idea what I have here?

They'll work on some seals, but their primary use is for pulling out packing material from packing glands on shafts and valve stems.

used a lot on on marine drive shafts and stuffing boxes, even in today's world. WHile these are truly vintage, the ones I have used are quite similar.

The Dura-Hooks are from the late 30's to the 40's I take it?

I recently did work at an old but still operating natural gas burning steam power generating station nearby. I think the first unit came online in 1958 or so. We would use these during scheduled outages to remove valve packing (example below) from high pressure steam valves that were documented as leaking while the units were operating. You would simply back out the compressing ring on the valve and thread this tool into the packing and hope it would come out in one piece.

I told my buddy they were earwax removal tools.... he is an I.T. network online yadda yadda.... "wiz" that once asked me if I had a "nail hammer" he could borrow.

All the pumps for liquid asphalt at the plants I worked at had a stuffing box that took those tools to pull out the old packing. Those are worth some bucks to the right person. If I wasn't retired I'd make you an offer on them. I never did have a nice full set of them.

While he didn't get the terminology correct, he did specify what he needed as opposed to borrowing a ball pein hammer, body panel hammer or rock climbing hammer, etc.

We are quick to criticize but not so inclined to educate. And then we complain about the younger generation's ineptitude. I teach every day I can.

"rock climbing hammer" !!? are you talking about a piton hammer ?

that particular young fellow is over half a century old and a dear friend who gives as good as he gets when it comes to me asking computer questions of him.
