A big thunderstorm tore some shingles off the roof of my shed. They apparently went to Kansas to look for Dorothy because they are nowhere to be found.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can go about buying just a couple of shingles rather than an entire square?

Just buy a single bundle if it's enough to do the repair. A square is 100 sq ft and consists of three bundles.

Most places that sell roofing also sell singles from broken bundles if you just need one or two.

If it tore a few shingles off, what's the condition off the rest of the shingles, it may be time for a replacement. Did somebody do a crappy job of putting them on or were they put on in cold weather ?

Your best bet is to buy just one bundle, in most cases one bundle will cover 33sq.ft and there are 3 bundles to a square (100 sq.ft.) Some shingles are very heavy in weight and gauge and they come 4 bundles to a square.

Believe it or not the Home Depots areound here actually do sell individual shingles.

And don't throw out the extras when you're done. Find a place to store them. That way you won't be kicking yourself when you have to shell out another $20 for the next few that you need.

(Ask me how I know.)

If the shed is not too large consider reroofing the whole thing with rolled roofing . Wind can't penetrate rolled roofs. Also see if you can scrounge up some metal roofing, maybe a leftover from a bldg job or other factory rehab.

And your contribution to this thread is what, exactly? Trying to find some technicality somewhere?

You stated that a square of roofing shingles is 3 bundles.

I corrected you. Not my fault you made an ignorant statement.

MANY shingles now days (typically 40 and 50 year) come in 4 bundles to a square. Who is to say this guys roof isnt of similar type? You? I hope not.

We have no idea the type of shingle he has on his shed.

On the other hand, if he lost a few in a storm, a repair MIGHT get him a few more years. But seeing he lost a few clearly shows that the shingles are well past their service life and should be replaced.

They are either too brittle or the adhesive has lost it's adhesion, or both.

Once again, you've offered nothing of any value to the OP. But hey, you found a possible inaccuracy in a statement made on the internet. Congratulations! Your parade will no doubt arrive soon.

Jeez people...what makes the difference whether it is three or four per square. The OP wants a couple of shingles. Besides that, it is three bundles per square for your standard three tab shingles and four bundles per square for most dimensional shingles as they are a thicker shingle.

Most places (like the place i work at) will sell by the bundle. if you need less than a bundle ask if they have any that are opened or have slight damage where only the top few shingles are damaged. you will have better luck with this at a smaller lumber yard over the box stores. alot of times if a guy just needs 3 or 4 shingles we'll just give them to 'em if we have a busted bundle.
Tamco three tab = 3 bundles to a square
timberline 30 yr, Tamco 30 year (both dimensional) = three bundles to a square
you dont get into four bundles to a square until you get into 40yr shingles or those funky, square looking shangles (Grand Manor and the like)
