This box is predominately mechanic-type tools. I have many storage bins, small tool boxes, 5-gal buckets, cabinets, Milwaukee pack out boxes, ammo cans and a shed full of other tools. Most of the storage bins are tasked for specific applications, electric, plumbing, tile, cement, painting, etc. I have a lot of tools lol been collecting for nearly 50 years...

Sounds like you need a garage sale.

Do you ever think about what happens to those fabulous tools when you are no longer around? I do. I have a lot of $$$ in tools. I really doubt the wife and kids would know what they are or how to get rid of them. I could see them selling my KRL, packed with pristine (and some rare) Snap-on tools for $500.

I'd do cleanup and duplicate/redundant tool removal first, then organize wrenches with these, as they allow dense storage: https://toolganizer.com/collections/metric-wrenches
Use Ernst socket rails for all the sockets, as previously suggested.
Once you do the cleanup and purge, then you'll have a better idea as to whether you need a new cabinet or cart, and how big, etc. If you just buy more space now, you'll never do the cleanup. Going through this now myself after a downsizing.

My "mechanics box"

You see that small drawer on the upper right and the little one below it (Top box)They hold my screwdrivers and nut drivers. You need to clear out the junk you don't use.

I love that box and have nearly identical one (just top and bottom, but bottom is currently at a friend's house) that is branded by MATCO.

Sorry! We were just trying to help. But yeah, good point. Get a bigger box! Life is short, get what you want.

What are you thinking about? You posted black, would you choose a black box or stick with red?

It's all good I appreciate the conversation. I posted black because my current box is black and those would be additions to it. I don't really have a strong preference if I were to buy a new box but not really a fan of the neon colors. With that said, I recently bought an orange tool cart. No particular reason just thought it looked cool.

You can remove (get rid of) tools without getting rid of (selling) them. Think of it as a 'partition' of your tool collection. Each organizer, drawer, or box...is just a partition...of your tools. Alot of the modern style toolcarts are very good for this exercise as well. Sounds like you just got hold of one, maybe this is a good opportunity to get it up and running.

Lol I just bought a small cart (two trays and a single drawer) that I'm going to use for projects that I'm working on on the driveway. It's currently filled to the brim holding some cased tools that are mostly automobile related (eg slide hammer, bearing pullers, etc). I don't work at home very often but when I do I'll remove the cased tools and replace it with whatever I need for the current project at hand.

If you have Family pass down Tools make a Box Frame 2x4’s, metal anything add with some Peg Board, Diamond Plate / expanded metal and Hang some of Those Tools so they are Not tucked away and Forgotten!

hang it on the Wall or Ceiling …. So your Loved ones are there with ya...

I keep several things out in my Garage to remember my mom, both grandfathers and some big influencers that made me who I am today.

Yeah lots of opinions about claw Hammers, the Hammers fit fine! I really would like to organize wrenches first and then sockets. I don't see having too many tools as the problem it's too little box lol...

You've met most of the given ideas with animosity. Consultation is seeking approval of a path already embarked upon.

Animosity? Wow. I asked for recommendations on a larger box. I appreciate the comments to pare down and reorganize but I'm not going to get rid of my tools. Sorry if you think I've been hostile it certainly wasn't my intention. I'm truly surprised that on a forum which has a reputation for members recommending more tools etc that so many were recommending the opposite.

ETA I just went through the responses and I "liked" nearly all of recommendations not sure how that could be considered animosity...

If there is any way that you can find a side box and middle box… you will still have a much nicer box than any Harbor Freight box.

Yeah I'm actually thinking about two middle boxes. I don't like that they're only two drawers and one of them is a small (shallow) drawer. I think having two extra deep drawers would go a long way though.

Definitely.

The thinner drawers of a side box would be a good place to move those screwdrivers.

If you don't want to spend Icon money, you could get one of the Gen 3 US General boxes.

organization may help reclaim space as others have suggested. I made a plier rack based on suggestions from GJ and I made wrench racks by winding electrical wire around a dowel
