I shall call it the Rec Room

Hey guys. I found this site a couple months ago when my wife and I were looking for new homes. We wanted to move outside of town so we were looking at acreages. Some of the properties had outbuildings. Well, to make a long story short, we bought this place. I am super excited to make the garage and the Rec Room my own. I came from a double garage that was only 22x22. I never thought I would have a kicka#$ shop to work and play in. The interior needs to be finished but that will happen in time.

The lot is 1.3 acres. The house is roughly 2,800 sqft with a triple garage

The Rec Room is a stick built 28 x 36 insulated and heated building. The ceiling is 13 feet high. Just enough room for a basketball hoop.

We've been in a little over a month now. I installed the basketball hoop and scoreboard. I have kids who love basketball. Here in South Dakota it is pretty tough to play basketball outside when there is a foot of snow and the temperature is below zero. So, why not put up a hoop in the shop.

I don't have a lot of other uses for the shop(Rec Room) for now. Some day I would like to get a Camaro to mess around with. Until then, we are going to have basketball and parties in the Rec Room. More to come. Thanks for looking!

This is a picture of the garage when we first moved in. I couldn't fit my truck in the garage with all of our **** in the way.

I busted my **** getting stuff moved into the house and out of the way so I could park my Yukon in the garage before the cold weather hit. I scraped windows for the last couple years. Now with a triple garage there should me no need for scrapping anymore

The garage was pretty bare when we arrived. No workbench and no shelving.

I have since installed some shelving and built a workbench.

I have a lot of plans for this garage and the Rec Room. The only problem I have is trying to decide which one I want to work on most. Guess it's not a bad problem to have. So far, I have found a ton of ideas on this site. I can't wait to have stuff to add to the forums. Thanks for looking!

Congrats on the new home- it's beautiful! Enjoy the acreage- after growing up on 2 acres, I sure do miss the elbow room.

One suggestion I would make is to move the backboard away from the wall a bit (can't tell from the pic, but it looks like it is flush with the wall). Having some breathing room under the rim makes for a better basketball experience, IMHO. You could simply build supports using 4x4s out from the wall.

Thanks guys! I have many ideas for both the garage and the shop. The one thing I really would like to do is paint the interiors so I can hang stuff on the walls. This won't happen til next spring/summer as it is too cold right now. I guess I will have to take some stuff off the walls. Oh well.

TXN: The backboard is off of the wall. I'm not sure how much but the backboard is on an adjustable mount so it can be raised or lowered. The mount is attached to a couple of 2x6s screwed together. The 2x6s were screwed to a piece of 1/2" OSB. I screwed the whole thing to the studs in the wall. It is holding up so far. I do need to make a "no hanging on the rim" sign so the hoop doesn't tear off the wall. I'll take a picture of it sometime. More to come.

I've been getting a lot of stuff done in the shop and in the garage. I received a couple Seville Classis cabinets for Christmas. I have installed one in the garage and one in the shop. These are pretty good cabinets for $70 each at Sams Club. I wasn't very excited about the light gray color so I bought some Rustoleum rattle cans to change the look of the cabinets. The color is Graphite. The can is labeled as wheel paint but it obviously works for other items aswell. I wanted a darker look but I didn't want black. This is a nice color and the cabinets look good.

I have also acquired some items to enhance the Rec Room experience.

Found this couch on Craigslists for $30. I has dual recliners and it is in pretty good shape. The one arm has been busted off but I will be able to fix it pretty easy. It really looks camouflage but, it isn't. It's not much to look at but it is pretty comfy. This is going to be a great napping couch and a great beer couch.

A couple weeks ago I got a little carried away while cranking the tunes in the shop. I cranked up the volume a little too much and blew my Sony receiver up. I was really disappointed in myself as I should have been more careful. Well, I found this Kenwood receiver on Craigslist with surround speakers and a powered sub for $50. So far, it has been a worthy replacement and the powered sub adds some good "thump" in the shop.

I really like Craigslist and the local classified ads. I am looking for used items for cheap that will do the job I need them to do. Like the Kenwood receiver and couch, I am looking for good deals. I don't need anything fancy or new and expensive. I just want stuff that works good.
