I think I bought a fake Snap On tool box

So I've had pretty good luck finding tools on Craigslist/OfferUp/Facebook marketplace, but I think I finally got screwed on a purchase. I bought this for $150, the slides are ok and has minimum surface rust with barely any body damage. I don't know much about snap on tools since I'm not a pro so I can't say for sure, but I later saw another post with a very similar looking box with the craftsman emblem. I was in a hurry when I picked it up, and I looked for a model number but couldn't find it. Thoughts on whether it's a fake and how much it's worth? Thanks.

Yeah sorry bud, that is a Waterloo/Craftsman box :(

I see people trying to pass these off on the various for sale apps and sites all the time, I feel really sad that some people get taken by it :(

Looks like an old Waterloo made craftsman homeowners bottom to me. They were often on sale for like $50 new. Sorry for your loss but, what the hell were you thinking buying that?

***** man, getting taken is the worst. Any way you can go 'talk' to the seller and get a refund?

Even if you didn't know whether it was a legit Snap-On box or not...why would you even pay what you did for that box after handling it? Or did you not inspect it, handle it before purchasing it?

Not meant as a snarky or rude comment.

That doesn't even remotely resemble a snapon box.

Did the seller also have a hyundai for sale with a Mercedes emblem on it?

Starting the thread off with a lie is not a good way to go, JMHO.

Awesome. Actually I paid $125. What's fair value for it?

Man, that *****.
Hard lesson learned.
I don't think I would have paid 150 even it was a Snap-on Box.

Ouch... yeah, it’s a fake for sure. I think the Snap On badge is probably worth more than the box IMHO. Not much you can do now but lick your wounds and turn it into something useful around the garage.

I'd keep it and use it. Lesson learned.

$125 / $150 really isn't all that much to learn the hard way to do due diligence whenever purchasing anything outside of your 'zone' of knowledge, and you did get a box out of it. Once the sting wears off that snap-on badge will bring a laugh.

Caveat emptor-"let the buyer beware"

If you don't know your subject, know your seller. As is said, "too-good to be true," usually-is. Walk-away next time. Don't buy what you don't know. Don't be pressured into a 'deal' you don't know-about.

I doubt your request to get a refund will bear any fruit. You can ask, if you can find him. You could try to lodge a complaint with CL or whatever media you used. I doubt your local PD would get involved. Do you have a copy of the ad where he refers to it as a 'Snap-On?'

Usually this is about the point when the OP abandons the thread with his tail between his legs. Should have come here before you purchased rather than after. People selling fakes often seek out the fool to complete their business model.

Go to the seller and say: "nobody sells me a fake Snap-on tool box and lives to tell about it!!! There better be $150 in my hand in 5 seconds or I thump your head and twist your neck!"

well, it *****. But PT Barnum was right.

I see it all the time on eBay too. Who buys Snap-on tools on eBay at over list price? Boggles my mind...

I knew I was going to get a lot of s*** for this, which I deserve, so that's why I decided to post about it. I just contacted him but no response yet. Like I said, I can't differentiate tool box manufacturers just by looking at it, and I tried finding a serial number when I picked it up, but it was dirty and I was in a hurry. I'm still out ahead in my overall craigslist/facebook marketplace/offerup purchases, but lesson learned. I'm going to ask more questions before I buy something I'm not sure about. Thanks.

Craigslist is an as is/where is kinda wild west environment. You take the risk and you either come out on top, or ya get bent over. This goes for locations, item descriptions, price, etc.

As the seller, theres no way in hell Id answer your call, whether I was honest or not. Im not selling things to meet people. After the sale is done I don't want to know you.

As the buyer, I have to expect the worst and hope for the best. If I like what I see at the price I want, Im in, but we meet at a location of my choice if I can help it, and if it even smells a little like a trap Im gone. I don't meet in back alleys of east St. Louis lol.

Regardless of whether or not you know who the manufacturer is or think you do...once you actually handled that box...you would've, should've realized it was a turd.

Just use it until you get 125 dollars back out of it.

He snookered you on the brand but you still have a servicable tool box.

FWIW just that Snap-on badge routinely goes for $20 or more. As far as getting duped by a dubious seller goes (or possibly a seller who also had been duped and may not have even known) this really wasn't that bad of a deal. Could have been a LOT worse. If I was in the same position I'd just fill it with tools like I planned on and call it my Snap-on box with a smirk. :D

Why not just use it as the most excellent box you believed it was?
You thought is was a superb deal, what changed your mind?
It's the same box you bought....

Wow....I actually agree with ducksface. This is a scary moment.

OP, when you bought it, you thought it was a good deal...so just use it, learn your lesson about impulse purchases and move on.

I know, me too! :shocking:

You paid whatever you paid for it as a toolbox. use the **** outta it, if and when it gives up the ghost, then get a new one, and save up for it. You bought it as a toolbox, so use it as a toolbox.

BTW - I keep procrastinating on buying an epiq, because every time I think about giving up my 40+ year old red & gray Craftsmen, I realize pulling the slides, regreasing them, cleaning it up and lubing the replacement casters is cheaper. And those boxes worked fine for years, so why change? I know, they're not "Cool Snap Ons" which means I lose GJ Wasta Points, but they've survived industrial settings and work settings and abuse like none other and they keep looking at me saying "I'm still here for you". My only complaint is they're too damned small... but they work, damnit.

Someday when I'm richer than Buffet, or I get truly tired of these, then fine... but for now, they just f"""ing work. And work is the key point!

The oniy high end mac or snap on i have been around were built close to 30 years ago. my dad bought a newer snap on box and i couldnt belive it was a snapon for a long time. If you bought it to use i would use it. It want take long to get that much use out of it.

i'd recommend not buying an epic. theres too many good deal on used 1022/7022 double banks out there that work just as well. the drawer configurations on the epics are actually narrower on the them than a comparable masters. Epics are still bringing (or commanding) insane prices for used boxes. the price difference alone is not worth the upgrade.

Why? It's buyer beware world. The buyer didn't do his due diligent homework before buying it.

Plus, he thought he was getting a good $125 deal for the tool box and was happy with it until he joined GJ and posted this thread.

Because nobody wants to be ripped off. Some people are dishonest and only the buyer knows how the seller appeared.

If it was an unknowing seller, say an elderly woman selling her husband’s stuff, that’s one thing. It happened to be a seller on the interwebs, so was it an honest mistake or a fast scam? We don’t know.
