i have a hydraulic power plant, a big one that i use quik connect to my various attachment, press, sheet metal bender etc.

i want a log splitter attachment, the power plant has plenty of power, but i want to build a splitter, might not use it for many years, i just want one

am I allowed to build one, just because i want one, is that good enough excuse?

Need has nothing to do with want unless you want it, then you definitely need it. I say let nothing stop you from your quest of want. ✊

Think of it as a Skill Building opportunity, you will be building your cutting, welding, plumbing and control design skills. Increased skills make you more employable and able to negotiate for increased compensation.

It makes good business sense to increase your skills. Having a Log Splitter can open up another business opportunity and possible increase your income. Increased income will allow the acquisition of more tools.

This where you can practice your due diligence. Check Craigslist, and a few stores that may sell that splitter. Then check the cost of renting a splitter for the few times you might need it.
My long time friend went through these steps. His last stop was at the tool rental. The owner was going to retire, he said. So my friend made an offer to buy the business. He was able to make a deal.
After a little tool freshening and a few gallons of paint, my friend sold the rental business and made a good profit.

Lets put this in another spin...

I want a sportbike, my truck and the cars get me to work and back just fine, but I want a motorcycle. It distracts my driving when I'm commuting thinking about the bike I need so it endangers my wellbeing. Therefor I need a new bike.
There's a math formula for that:
N +1 (where N is the number of motorcycles (or tools) that you already own).

In answer to "drmarkr" see above Quote.
As far as OP, if the hydraulic power source has a decent flow rate to create a decent cycle time to suit your purposes, then by all means do it!

Absolutely go for it. It isn't like the expense is going to cause you to miss a mortgage payment. If you don't use it after about 2 years sell it. You had some fun, and you probably leaned a thing or two in the process. Definitely worth it to me.

I'm at the point if I need a tool for a job, I just go buy it. I'll look for the best deal or even buy used. The wife no longer argues or questions what I buy.
Who am I to argue with someone wanting to buy or build a new tool ?

If you build it, you have to take pics and start a thread. If you buy it, you have to take a picture and post in the new tool arrival thread.

How did you get to this point in your life, and just now are asking this question? Did you really need that aforementioned power unit? Did you really need the tools you mentioned that are powered by this power unit? Do you really need the garage/shop that house these tools? Couldn't you (like many people I know) spend you leisure time in front of the television watching sporting events while consuming numerous adult beverages? It seems to me that you are well past asking these types of questions.
