My wife bought a used watch at an estate sale recently, and somehow on the journey home the back cover came off and was lost. Took it to our local watch repairman, and he said he'd dig thru boxes of old parts and see if he could find a back cover that would fit. After 3 weeks of no luck, I went in to pick it up and he suggested he might be able to fit a crystal (i.e. front clear cover) on the back to make it useable. It'll make it a little thicker he said, but the thing could be worn and would work fine. By golly he had one that fit! Now the watch is a unique timepiece, as I doubt anybody would spend $20 of repair on a 3 dollar no-name watch. And the Mrs. is thrilled!
Love mechanics and repairman who think outside the box and keep old devices going. And I think having the back clear so you can see the inside is so cool.

Casey Ladelle, over on youtube presented something close to this. Called to tow a rental truck to the rental’s maintenance yard due to a no start. It would have been a several hour trip. Took a moment and checked..... yep low enough on oil to trip the safety. Two quarts added and it cranked right up. Told the dealer he only owed him for the oil and they could drive it to the yard on their own time over paying his rate to load and tow.

Lots of automatics and mechanical watches comes with exhibition case backs so you can see the movement, but I doubt any/many quartz do.
