And I love the old ratchets people bring in. I mean some people bring in some of the coolest oldest ratchets I have ever seen. I mean we keep about 400 rebuilt GOOD steel ratchets under the counter to give to people when they break them.

Do you guys get the rebuilt ones or make a scene when to get a new one?
+
Also have you guys ever had a problem turning any kind of hand tool in at sears for a new one? If so Tell me what happened I switch everything no questions asked whether they are a professional mechanic or an everyday handyman like myself.

At my sears if they don't have rebuild kits for that ratchet, you get a new asian-manufactured one. Then they throw the broken ratchet into a box under the counter. I've tried purchasing the box, but they said it's very against the rules there.

They all have the rebuild kits, they just don't do **** to train employees to rebuild them. Was thrilled to trade out a junk RP ratchet for an older rebuilt RHFT (non-quick release) a few months back.

They should have them. Unless its an hometown store we cant sell the old ones But what I do is just buy a new one for like $10 and switch it out for the old one. Its a little trick I do to be able to buy the old ones

taterhead,

Take some pics of the ratchets they have below the counter and some pics of your craftsman ratchet collection. Lots of collectors here would love to see them. Thanks!

I've tried that, and flat-out buying them. They refuse. Supposedly management frowns on it, and someone's been fired for it from that store before. Such a shame, as I'm told they're melted down.

Yea they send them off to get melted down They shouldnt care the store gets paid for every tool they exchange its free money to them at full retail price. My manager likes me I spend almost half my check on tools every two weeks

Its the best tool box we sell It doesn't even belong as the same level as craftsman I put it in the level of kennedy and snap-on

From what I have can tell the vipers are VERY similar to menards masterforce boxes. I'm pretty sure they come from the same factory. Not up there with snap on but way better then the craftsman junk. In my opinion the masterforce boxes are the best value out there.

yep...looks like a Kennedy...same drawer config as there Mant. Pro box. I traded an old tape mesure that I bought from an antique store to my Sears about 10 years ago for the whole box of ratches under the counter...The tape mesure was there 25 anvers. one and the manager wanted it...it was mint in the box..but I had $8 in it so it was fun to trade...old brass one...that was the Golden Rule from 1936...then sold all the ratches at the swapmeet and bought snap on ones from a pawnshop...lol...gee I remember those days...but hey at 22 years old I had about 35K in tools..

Well for the price to quality ratio I think its with snap-on They are extremely well made for the price I mean like 10times better than the craftsman boxes. The casters on this box are worth atleast $25 each lol I mean they are awesome and roll like butter

I envy you and have applied at Sears just now, collect ratchets for a year and be gone :)

It took me 7 months to get on in tool department. First they wanted me to sell appliances and I was like NOPE I know a lot about tools I want to be in THAT department. SO 7 months later got the job. Its actually a pretty chill job and you make as much as you want because it is commission + base pay. :rocker::rocker:

So anything you ring up at the register you get a piece of? When I go to my Sears it doesn't strike me that that the floor people seem particularly excited to complete the transaction. I can't speak for everybody but if I was getting a cut of every item I sold I would definitely be hustling during the entire course of my shift.

I don't want to pry too deeply into your income but would you say the commission figures are higher than your hourly wages typically?

I agree about the not hustling. I went to the Black Friday to pick up a couple of items and looked around the wrench selection for metric flare nut wrenches.

A store associate asked me if I needed help and I told him what I was looking for. He asked a manager who obviously was clueless and then made no attempt to look in the storeroom to help me. There were just a few customers and plenty of sears associates to help them.

I was hoping to find the Professional flare nut wrenchs, now I will be buying online from one the the tool vendors that I've seen suggested here that gets good ratings for selection and prices.

I'm with you, never would I EVER have guessed Sears associates were on commission. I would be showing customers every sale item and every deep discount they had on the shelves.

Of course in order to show the sale items you would have to know the prices, and since my store only has price tags on about half the items that would be kind of hard.

I saw the Viper boxes the first time last week. I was with my wife, who bought me my last box, a Craftsmen, and I was looing, and could just tell they were different. I tapped the Viper, and then tapped the Craftsmen, and she said, "I guess I bought you the wrong box."
They are very solid, and sound like a safe.

I worked in a Sears warehouse through a temp service one Christmas break while I was in college and all the floor guys were on commission. Listening to them on breaks I got the impression that they were very bitter with one another over who was ringing up more sales. Very depressing group of selfish people. I imagine the allure of chasing commissions, regardless of how much you can make, wears off pretty quick. My .02 cents.

I was aware y'all work on commission. At my store there is an older guy who is always happy to help, I seek him out when purchasing when buying anything.

Thing is, with the online coupons and not being able to use them in store, I save a lot of money buying online nowadays so I spend less in store.

I've been wondering something, and since you work at sears maybe you can enlighten us all:

1. the state of Sears. it appears C-man's being shopped around and might not be around for much longer, and Sears itself is in some serious financial trouble. What's the coffee cooler discussion about the brand and it's future?

2. COO is China on many tools now. I've been kind of put off by Sears and craftsman recently for charging US prices on Chinese products. Sorry but I'm not paying $40 for a china made ratchet. I've got two identical 1/2" rathcets from Sears and the newer one looks like **** next to the older one. For the money I'm thinking of swapping to SK, Wright, Williams, or Armstrong. Only thing keeping Sears in my mind is ease of warranty, but again with china as COO I'm not gonna be happy when my US produced ratchets are swapped out for chinese ones. Are the days of US produced tools over for good at Sears?

I'm wanting to believe in Craftsman, but it's getting harder and harder....as an insider, please give us some good news

I think when they put items on sale, often times USA items, it counterbalances this. I've bought $200-300 worth of USA Craftsman tools over the past month or two and have not payed over %50 retail, that is buying them all new at Sears. I would imagine the more China they have the larger and more frequent the "sales" become.

I average about $10.50/hour I also have to sell lawn and garden, christmas, fitness equipment and game room tables. I hustle to get every customer and Im the top salesman on the floor people always come back to see me because I know soo much about tools. The only problem is most tools are only 1% commission so you have to sell alot of them to make any kind good money

Well they do hire alot of dumbies to work there to fill the payroll. I need some more people like myself because everyone is always asking me questions about tools then getting the sale after I have to tell the customer all about the specific thing they are looking for

There is a way he can order it online and him still get commision for it just ask him to do a store to home for. If he always treats you right help him out lol. Store to homes = 4% commission and it makes you look good to management when you get them

Yea we do still have some sockets and random wrenches that were made in the usa. You just have to find them thru the department look for an older red label thats a tip to know if its usa or not.

And I havent heard anything about sears being in financial trouble or not atleast from management.

Now What I can say about craftsman is that they are about to ruin the brand with this new Craftsman evolv ******** Those are crappy made china plastic tools being sold for china prices yea they may get the job done but I dont like the way the company is doing it at all
