Also have you guys ever had a problem turning any kind of hand tool in at sears for a new one?

I had a problem a few years ago when I broke a 3/8" universal flex socket...The socket broke into several pieces and all that was remaing was apprx half of the socket with the letter "C" on it...I showed it to the falesman who replied, "This isn't a Craftsman." I told him that it was, and that I only owned them in Crafstman and Snap-On, and it was clearly not a Snappy...Another employee came by , looked at it, and said, "Yupp, that's ours." And he replaced it for me...

Yeah I know a few guys at the local sears and they showed me a huge box of no name stuff that they just exchanged because the "customers" were making a huge fit about it. Ehh. I could never do that.

Some of the people in my store hustle, and some look half-awake. Theres a guy who looks about 20-22 and hes always glad to help.

He rang me up when I dropped $200 on the 309 piece set earlier this year.

I worked at the auto center for about 2 years, didn't make **** for money(all we ever did was warranty flat repairs which = no commission) + the drive across town didn't help.

Good to know we have a knowledgble Sears tool guy here on the forum.

Thoughts on the Nextec cordless over the others?

I would go with the bolt on its alot better 20v lithium ion battery and looks cooler

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/dap_1015...ell=W21&redirectType=BRAT_RULE&prop17=bolt on

Its on sale right also was 129.99 when it first came. Attachments go on sale periodically too.

so, do you guys have to give commission back when i bring in tools for warranty? The "main guy" at my sears absolutely throws a ******* fit when I bring in more than three items at one time for warranty. He usually says, you are going to have to leave this stuff and come in back in an hour. Meanwhile, there is only one customer on the floor and three workers all standing around.

Not taking a shot at you, but my local sears is absolutely horrible. Just curious about the warranty, because I swear these guys are paying for the replacement tools out of their own pocket. I literally get questioned on every single tool I bring in. The guy looks it over, rolls it around in his hands, once he een was holding a screwdriver up to the light to check if the broken tip measured up to his standards for damage. Several times he has told me just to grind down a screwdriver tip instead of asking for warranty. He also never wants to warranty 1/2 and 3/4 ratches because "everybody abuses these - they werent designed for that kind of torque" !!

I usually just go and pick all the items off the shelf myself and bring it up to the counter. Some guys will inspect every model number other have just counted the pieces to make sure it was an even swap.

You might be visting a hometown store those are locally owned and operated. They are usually dicks like that. I work for one of the corporate ones in like the malls that carry everything. We dont ask any questions about how or why its broke. We just warranty it out.

1. When we warranty something out its just like as if we sold it ( the store gets the full retail value of it)
2. We (salesmen) get commission for ringing warranty exchanges.
3. When someone brings in a ratchet I always offer a rebuilt one packed full of grease and ready to go(usually better than the new ones)
4. They arent supposed to question you about something when you bring it back in for replacement.
5. I have plenty of people bring in perfectly fine tools that nothing is wrong with them they want new shiny ones.
6. Management will always side with the customer warranty exchanges are the last of their worries they have wayyyy bigger things to deal with than that.
7. Now when someone brings in a bag full of rusted junk and I have to get my hands dirty I tell them they can find the stuff themselves and Ill check them out when they are ready.
8. We don't have to give you back the exact same one ex. if you have a 6pt and want a 12pt you can do that. no biggie

the numbers dont matter they change them all the time. i just put them all side by side and see if they match up. unless they want a substitution then thats fine

Yeah, I got ***** slapped the last time I offered to do all the work. He told me lots of people try and steal tools, so they have to find each and every one by himself.

Tater -
I think it is a corporate store. In a big mall in a city of 250,000 people. Tool dept is probably 1200 sq feet, not counting lawn/garden, tire/batt, or exercise dept. Add those in and probably 4000 sq feet of floor sales space.

So, I hear you saying that the person that rings up my warrantys gets commission? I just dont get Mr. Grumpy then. I have a fleet of trucks and each truck has its own full set of craftsman tools that I provide, plus a 4 bay truck shop that we do our own wrenching on. Yes, we have a lot of craftsman, and yes, we do warranty a lot of craftsman, but I shouldnt have to try and figure out the day a certain salesman is not working just so i can get my tools warrantied without a fistfight.

Many thanks for your insight to how it works. I will search out one of the young guys next time and see if he wants the business!

Next time it happens ask for the hardware manager. Just keep going higher until you get the store manager.
Even then if no luck get everyones name. Starting with the salesman call corporate and report them. Its against sears policy to turn away a warranty exchange.....

Now I have turned away 2 guys from bringing stuff in because they both were exchanging the tools then trying to return the tools to get cash back. Which is a no no and will get you fired. Plus he keeps bringing in good stuff that nothing is wrong with it old old old craftsman stuff we dont even sell anymore. Then they expected me to tie up 2+ hours with them finding the stuff for them-- missing out on sales. They were too lazy to go find all the stuff themselves. I mean like 100+ sockets at a time

My manager told me we only do TOOL 4 TOOL. No cash back or anything like that.

One of the last times I was at Sears, a guy tried to warranty several Greenlee items (Clearly NOT Craftsman) and they denied him as they should.

Last time I took in a 1/2" ratchet that was slipping, the salesperson offered me a rebuilt one instead. I turned in one like the bottom one in the pic and received the top one. It made me happy. They are the same length, they just look different in the photo.

Tater...I have a question for you since my local Sears "pros" are unable to answer it. I received a Craftsman 8 Amp Impact Wrench (Sears Item# 00927990000 Model# 6903) last night. The advertising for that model is "iffy" concerning if it is a variable speed or not, but I bought it based on many GJ comments concerning "the Sears corded impact wrench and the Milwaukee corded being the only two that have variable speed". Well, I tried it today and it is not variable speed....it's either 0 RPM or balls out. Did this model used to be variable speed and they changed it or are the many GJ comments I've been reading concerning the Craftsman corded being Variable Speed referring to an older model? Your help, or anyones help for that matter, that has experience with this Craftsman tool would be appreciated, since I'd like to return it today to either get the Milwaukee Variable Speed or just get a cordless. For those that may answer, "just go air powered", I already have air powered impact wrenches, but sometime the compressor doesn't play nice nice when its 10 degrees below zero and not all my relatives homes have air compressors. Thanks in advance.

We just re-did our corded area about 2 months ago I know the one you are talking about I sold one today to customer. They are not variable speed. They have a foraward and reverse Im not sure about the older models those were all sold when I first started working there in may.

If you are going to get a cordless impact I would go with the dewalt 1/2 18v impact we sell. Its got alot of torque i dont have the exact specs right now but its powerful

Since you are the resident Craftsman guy, I have a question. I have a 3 pc set of USA thin profile as well as a few other USA craftsman pieces that I would like to purchase rebuild kits for just to have for the future. I don't think they are sold in the store. Can they be ordered if requested?

they have them in store. typically they do not want to sell them to you, but you can talk them into it 9 out of 10 times. find the right associate to talk to, someone who seems knowledgeable.

i have rebuilds put away for all my craftsman ratchets, and put 84t premium kits in my 60t gearwrench ratchets also. ask for them one at a time, and they will usually give em up. penny each :rocker:

Thanks Tater. Sears should really change the description of the 8 Amp Impact on the website. The description still states, in a roundabout way, that the tool is variable speed. The description states, "With a variable speed, you can easily choose the right speed to suit the job at hand". Perhaps it should be changed to read, "Had you bought a variable speed Impact Wrench instead of this one, you could easily choose the right speed to suit the job at hand." I know Sears is your livlihood, but it's always something with them, if you know what I mean. I want "my mothers Sears" back.....Thanks again.

I have tried numerous times to get rebuild kits thru corporate and thru my store but still no luck. I don't get why they wouldn't sell them I have seen that if you make friends with one of the owners of the hometown stores you might have better luck
They aren't held to the same standards as full line stores like us. Now what we have done before is give the person a rebuild kit if they brought in a ratchet that was personalized or something special like that. Just tell them that your ill rebuild it yourself. Don't expect it to work all the time also make sure to get the right ones lol

Yea when my manger orders them they cost .01 each. That's what they pay for them. They try to keep the kits out of the public hands. We get them in about 200 or so a week

Yea what really pisses me off is online they have 3rd party vendors selling stuff we can't order and don't carry in the store. It's thru some 10000 diff vendors. They over complicate a lot of things but. The craftsman warranty is the best in the business in my opinion for hand tools. No questions asked just get another one ^_^

I brought a ratchet in saying it needed to be rebuilt but I wanted to keep it for sentimental reasons, I told him I could rebuild it myself if he would give me a kit. He brought the ratchet in the back found the appropriate kit and just handed it to me. Now I am sure your experiences may vary. This guy was pretty clueless though, on a previous exchange he "helped" me find a few 1/4" sockets and when we got to the register 75% of them were wrong. The other half he claimed were out of stock were right on the shelf.

Would they hire me to rebuild the ratchets? What an awesome job that would be
The guys in recieving and the PMT guy rebuild ratchets but they also have to fix all and handle all the returns its a pretty easy job. Also put together merchandise for customers
