I dont know if any of you have noticed these "tool cabinets" at Lowe's, but I have been watching them for over a year. I would like to have about 6 of these along one wall as upper cabinets. They have a nice latch assembly and 2 bottom pull out ball bearing drawers. I would take off the casters and handle and give the top boxes to my kids or sell them? Now all I need is $1200...

BTW. how do I make the pics show up without a thumbnail?

Cool idea and they would probably work well. I'd be concerned with just screwing them through the back though. They obviously weren't meant to hang on a wall. Maybe a heavy duty shelf, supported from the floor, for them to sit on and then screw them to the wall. Lowes usually has a deal for 5 or 10% off if you open a new charge account with them. List the top boxes on Craig's and put the casters on Ebay. They get pretty good reviews.

I would probably fasten some angle iron to the wall and bolt that where the rear casters would have been to hold the weight.
Then screw the top to keep it up there.

I've had my eye on this too for months. They are built very well and sturdy. The doors hardly flex at all. The color might even match the HF tool cart.

If used as wall cabinets, wouldn't the drawers be too high to look into?

I just thought of an idea of stacking these top-and-bottom as well as side-by-side. Your support problem would be less of an issue since they'll be supported by the ground.

One thing I just noticed is that they have that ******* angle at the bottom of the left and right sides. Craftsman boxes have this same feature. It means they don't sit flat and any weight would rest on the bottom of the two sides. You'd have to put a spacer, like piece of plywood down first, so that the load is evenly distributed. Cut it to fit between the two ends. I'll have to check these out the next time I go to Lowes.

not feeling it. and have you investigated the construction of these to see if suitable for supporting the weight from the back -- even with the support from the back bottom caster area

For whatever reason, the concept doesn't grab me either. A roller box is designed and built to support weight on the bottom. Your results may vary.

Make shelf brackets out of 2*4s and bolt it to them thru the caster holes and lag the thing into the wall thru the back of the cabinet.

Should stand up to the weight then.

picked up two of these on sale for $75. going to flip them upside down and use them as cabinets. the drawers pull right out and flip over. just need to put a piece of plywood in them for a shelf cause the bottom is now the top on the cabinet part. they also are kinda wide so plan accordingly. (17" wide) also you could get $25-$50 for the tops if you dont want em!

My usage for these would be for those bigger cumbersome tools like routers, drills with cords, circular saws ect.... Then put the accessories that go with them in the drawers. ie. drill bits, router bits, specialty wrenches, dept gauges, blades ect…
Since they are so bulky I dont think the weight would be problem.
And they would still look professional.
