Ok my electrical supply place said I can mount these right to ceiling but the instructions say it needs to be 6" from chains but they also sell a bracket that will lower the fixture 3" from ceiling.
Electrical supply house said they changed the lights and could i could mout to ceiling.
Anyone know why they need to hang?

This is what the manufacturer says:

Lithonia's manual said:
INSTALLATION — Suitable for suspension by chain, cable, surface-mounting bracket, hook monopoint or single
(pendant) monopoint.

Either the chain mounting, or the brackets. No direct surface mount. Unless the seller can show you written (that you can take with you) documentation otherwise, I'd consider that authoritative.

IMHO their saying you can mount to the ceiling doesn't mean direct, just that it is possible (with the optional brackets.)

don't mount these to the ceiling directly, you need a minimum of 3" clearance between the fixture and mounting surface to keep the ballast operating within its temperature tolerance range.

Don't trust the word of the counter guy at the electrical supply house for anything. They haven't bothered to read the instructions, and even if they did, they want to make a sale, so they are going to tell you what you want to hear. The instructions are the final authority, unless the manufacturer has issued instructions or bulletins with more recent dates on them than the instructions with the lights.

Buy the spacing brackets and be done with it.
