??Ice picks![]()
Used to pick at and break up large blocks of ice in the old days when there were ice deliveries made to your door. These blocks were also used in the early refrigerators. The company I work for was started in 1864 and one of the early products were the sheet metal casting cans for the ice.
The cans were filled with water and allowed to freeze in the winter, then packed in sawdust in warehouses for preservation. During warm weather out they came to be delivered for use. When refrigerigation improved, the method changed to using the equipment to freeze the water. We use the leftover old stock of ice cans for small trash cans around our facility now to remind us where we came from. Still kicking after all this time.
