Just brought this home today, I'm hoping I didn't pay too much for it. Seems to be a little rough, but in useable condition.

Get a very bright light and look on the backs of the boxes. Model numbers and other info will be stamped on there, including year. If I had to guess, I'd guess top is '60's maybe early '70's and bottom is likely '50's, early '60's. Locks are still available (I have one on backorder). They'll clean up nice. If they were mine, I'd completely break the drawers and slides down and clean that way. Even though they aren't roller slides, once you de-gunk them, they are very useable.

The markings are pretty faint but I think the top box is KRA 598 and the bottom is KRA 377D.

Both of these boxes have date codes on them. It will be two digits and will be right near the markings you've already found.

Both can be cleaned up really well. I'd remove everything and then get down to the dirty business of cleaning, lubing, assembly and polishing the paint.

As far as paying too much, that stack would bring about $250 around here these days. I'm unsure where you live but prices vary widely based on location.

As I recall, I brought home a KR59 top box only, (9 drawer) a few months ago from a guy in Northern Illinois. Box was in reasonably good shape and I paid $275. So i think you did well. Just compare to a new box....yikes, those are really spendy! The best thing is, you have a true Snap On box to be proud of now. Congrats!

You might be surprised how well that box cleans up. (Rubbing compound, SO red touch up paint, new liners and a few hours of time.)

Do you have some inside info on what the OP paid, or did I miss that?
Ha! I misread the OP question....I just saw $250 in the string and got confused...senior moment. sorry. FWIW, I've historically purchased used Snap On tools at 30% and consider (30% of new, a very good price). At 10% of new, I consider that a salvage price. For example, a comparable KRA4059 new Snap On 26" top chest tool chest is $1505 per their website. So, 30% of 1505, is $450 ish. Anyway, sorry for the rambling. I'd like to hear your thoughts on used SO tool or tool box pricing....;)

thehorse13 summed up pricing in my opinion. He's maybe an hour or so west of me (I think) and he said that stack would be listed $250ish in his area. It'd probably be listed $350-$500 ("asking price") in my area. I paid $100 for a similar top section a year ago at a pawn shop and that had a working lock with keys, but missing emblem, and considered that a steal.

Thanks for all the help, it looks like they might not be worth as much as I had hoped, but I snatched them up for 150 so I still made out! Think I will spend some time doing some basic restoration on them and see how it comes out

If that is what you paid for that stack, in my opinion, you scored pretty good. Congrats. I wouldn't have been able to get my money out fast enough.
