Found this on the ground while riding a bike. Welded bumps make a handle of sorts. Tip is a triangular shape that has been ground to a point. Is it a tool or a weapon? Any insights would be appreciated!

It looks like a philips screwdriver but with a really sharp point. A less contrasty photo would help as the tip is hard to discern. Many centre punches are made with 4 sides instead of being ground circular but with the vanes this looks like a philips.

Sorry, hard to get good light this time of year!

No prisons nearby. Triangular tip does look like something you'd cast a plastic handle around, but it goes into the larger diameter "handle" section with a nice radius. End of "handle" has been rounded-off, and I'm guessing the welding of the handle spots has caused the plating to rust.

I'll say one thing. That grip pattern is only useful for stabbing/pulling it out.

What it's use was, can't say but it's not uncommon to find stuff that's been ditched on the side of the road/in the brush when someone gets spooked and it'd probably be best to treat that piece as such(ie don't carry it around or leave it in the back of your car) if you don't have an alibi for between 10pm and 8am Monday morning.

You mentioned plating, are the weld blobs plated also?
I'm thinking some kind of specialized tool. The point has a flat tip, and the outer edges of the triangle are nothing close to sharp, and not really larger than the shaft. Not that it wouldn't stab, but the extra effort for the triangle is lost. It likely wouldn't make a triangular wound.

I had a tire hole reamer that looked a lot like that. When the plastic handle cracked off, I considered welding bumps on it, but just got the tire patch guy to give me a new, better one.

But it could be an out of prison shank. The bright side, it wasn’t covered in blood.
Wouldn’t an out of prison shank just be a knife? Lol

Wouldn’t it have some type of abrasive finish, or a twist with sharp edges?

The 3 sided end would make you think it is for a drill chuck. What would fit on the other end? Would it hold a rubber sanding drum?

Yes, actually, some of the blobs do have plating on them.

And under closer inspection, the "tip" is definitely manufactured. The edges of the triangular shape flare out past the shaft a little, and plating remains on the tapered area.

Whoever had the drill chuck idea is probably on to something; maybe I've been looking at this backwards! Seemed like too much trouble for a lame weapon.

Looks like it was used as a punch for a pit, but it almost looks like an old femur surgical pin.....

No, not necessarily. Some prefer something that can't be traced back. A kitchen knife could possibly be traced back to the butcher block knife holder in the kitchen. I am reaching here, you are probably right lol. I still like the out of prison shank though.

I doubt it was made as a weapon. The chrome plating, the lack of a sharp point, or sharp edges along the triangular, are seriously lacking for the effort of a weapon. While a triangular weapon is quite effective, it must make a triangular wound. It was likely built as a driver tool for something.
