Going through some of my grandfathers stuff and he's got an old hammer, what is this hammer designed for?

What is the split end intended to do?

Yup. The split end is likely magnetic. Try sticking a small tack to it.

My uncle would set the tack with the magnetic side and spin the hammer while bringing it in to hammer the tack in with the other end. It was pretty impressive.
