Says there isn't a name anywhere on it. Is it specialized for something or could it work just fine in a shop?

It is an old machine vise for something like an old milling machine, or metal shaper or the like. I am sure it would work just fine as long as you have something to mount it to securely. It was made specifically for a machine though as you have guessed.
