I posted this in General, but then thought maybe it should go here....Sorry!

I have an idea, but need some help with some apsects of it...

I want to build a "spray can/rattle can shaker". You know how you are supposed to shake a spray bomb/rattle can for 1 minute... Everyone has seen the shakers they have for quart and gallon cans at the paint store, so why not one for a spray bomb? I envision using a small motor - either wind-up, battery or AC powered - attached to the bench or other base, that can shake a holder, so you can drop in a rattle can.

THE IMPORTANT(hard) PART: finding a motor, or fabbing a part, that will shake it back and forth. My idea (currently) is a windsheild wiper motor (I know, brilliant - right?!)....

I know you guys are more brilliant than I am by a few orders of magnitute...so....let the ideas fly boys!!!

good idea, but you would have to make it low cost enough or people wont buy it

for battery power you need a motor

for wind up you would need a clockwork mechanism

I have thought about the same thing. My idea was a take off of a ammo case cleaner. The motor has an offset piece of metal to make the motor shake. The motor is mounted on the container. You need a container on top of the unit to be on springs , so it can shake. Place the can into and a cover to secure the can.

Using a small container will allow people who use those "Testor" paint bottles for crafts.

If made cheap there is a great market for the hobbiest.

E-mail me and I will instruct you where to send my share of the profits!!

Good ideas guys!
I was kinda joking about the invention-for-profit part....I really need this tool as I use a lot of spray cans when restoring cars (see Chilly Challenger thread). Last weekend I used 4 colors to do the brake booster and I'm sure I'm not shaking them enough sometimes....

The drill idea one is v. good - I would make the part that fits in the chuck bent at two angles so it would rotate lop-sided. One could also mount a holder to a Dual Action sander or some such tool....

FWIW... A normal paint can shaker will work as long as the cap is on the can. A bit more expensive, sure... but you never know with e-bay!

Somewhere on the forum a person was using an old garage-sale saber saw to do the shaking. I guess you could use some kind of half cylinder to hold the can and then strap it in, I was thinking something like the nicer caulk guns. But there is probably a simpler way.

How about a motor with a eccentric flywheel driving a bucket used to contain the can

I've been thinking about a design for a shaker for a while. I've got a washing machine motor and a length of plastic pipe that will hold a can. All I need is an eccentric cam for the motor. A spring pulls the pipe down against the eccentric. Where can I find an eccentric for the motor?

Get one of the very old hand massagers that had springs or straps that went around the hand. Put the can in it an put the motor section in a vise.

OK-I've put together a prototype of the design I'm going with. I'm going to post it up on General Garage Discussion board - as it's frequented much more than this area....
Look for it there!

My mother and father built one that works well. It has an arm with 3 pivots, an adjustable gripper on the end and is self loading. Oh wait, thats my right arm. :)

You may be over thinking the problem. I just duct taped a can to my little Porter Cable orbital sander. Works like a charm and it's free if you already have a sander.

Later, David
