My benches are 42'' tall and each have a vise on them. I am 6'4'' and this works well for me. you should set them based on how tall you are is my guess.

My largest vise for heavy work is around elbow height to the jaw tops, others 2"-3" higher, and the next stand I build will be another 2"-3" higher yet. If you're doing serious work in a large vise with larger, heavier workpieces using big wrenches, bars, hammers, etc. you want it lower. If you are using your vise and for smaller, lighter assembly type work, your back will thank you if you mount it higher. Your height and realistic intended use should dictate...

Depends what your working on. For filing on small intricate parts I use a vise that is mounted higher. For fixturing heavy weldments then something lower works. A lot depends on the type of work you are doing. Just what cretedog is saying. My shop is used for everything from fixing RC cars to farm and construction machines.
