Hi all,

This is a first post. After 20 years in Colorado, we are knocking down our single lane carport and replacing it with a 26x30 garage with an 18'-wide door. I'm putting in scissor trusses do I can put in a two post lift with storage above for the other half.. Other than that I would like a wood working area (table saw with dust vac) and mechanic area. A ventilated paint booth would be nice also, but running out of room fast. Ideas are welcome. Happy New Year to all.

Rick,

I am curious why you want such a wide door? I am building a similar size garage (25x30), but I want a 10-ft wide door so that I do not loose precious wall space. No judgement is intended, I am just curious what the thought process is.

Seems like a 2 post lift is going to be very tight with that orientation, if you expect to park 2 cars regularly. An 18' wide door is just barely enough to open the car doors and get out in my experience (if the other car is already present).

If you are making it a 1-car garage then no worries. I would at minimum thicken the slab in that area to prepare for the wedge anchors for the lift.

Hi W.O.B., iit will be a two car garage thats 26-ft wide so thats four feet of additional space to both sides of the 18-ft door. The 18-ft is to avoid side mirror's going missing when backing out. The scissor trusses will be load bearing so in addition to the space at the the back I will have shelving up above.

Hi Matt, I will be doing an initial layout today and look forward to your feedback. With the 26-ft width, thare is still 4 ft on each side of the 18-ft door. The plans are for 6" of 4000 psi concrete so no additional piers should be necessary as the lift specs says a minimum of 4" of 3000 psi.

Our crew is starting today on our shop, 18' door here too. You won't regret it, especially if you are moving multiple vehicles and/or trailers.

I have an 18’ door on my 24x28 and I have no regrets going that wide. I believe you’ll be happy with it as well.

I am in the process of building my 26 x 30 garage, but my doors are on the 30' wall. I put two 9' doors plus a man door. I could not have made a wide door support the roof loads since my doors are on the eave side of the garage. For some reason I don't like the way garages look with the doors on the gable ends. I wish I had made it 26 x 32 and put 10' doors, but it will work. I have 10'6" flat ceiling with apartment upstairs, I plan to put a 4 post lift at some point.

Good luck on yours!

Hi kasander, nice work on your plans and engineering drawings. I will post more details of mine soon. I will probably keep my 60-gal Porter Cable compressor in the garage to keep the neighbors happy. I went with scissor trusses and a sloping garage door track to facilitate the 2-post asymmetrical lift. Still not decided between a Rotary or a BendPak. I want the asymmetrical to move the posts as far away from the door as possible. My mechanicing is hobby level, but at 60, I'm not as agile crawling under the cars anymore.
