Ok , I am wanting to build some kind of awning or porch over my man door on my metal shop. I have seen some prefab awnings but they are built where they could catch debris , leaves etc... . I guess I just want to make sure it is attached pretty solid and figure out how to seal between it and the building.
Any ideas or pictures? Thanks guys!!

I was in Chattanooga, TN the other day & saw a garage that had a Thunderbird trunk lid over its door...pretty neat.

I'm with ya, TEXACMAN, I too have an outside door that I would like to have an awning over. I have two windows on the garage also I am thinking about awnings for.

So, I would be interested as well. Nothing worse than standing in the rain fumbling around trying to get the door unlocked to go into the garage!

Any ideas, guys?

Check out pycawnings.com for an inexpensive, high quality window or door awning. I do like the concept of the thunderbird hood awning. Steve

Here's sort of a shot of mine, on the right. The architect came up with it. You can't see the roof of the garage/studio but it's curved, standing seam metal. Sweet. But $$$$.

Maybe you can make something to match the siding on the garage like I did. I used the leftover scrap while building the garage to construct an awning over the side door. The roof & sides have plywood sheathing, the frame is made from 2 x 4's, the siding & soffit match the siding & soffit on the building. It's self supporting, has a light in it, & the entire thing is just a little wider than the 30" entry door.

I cut 2 x 4's & made 3 small trusses, each one being glued & screwed together to a trianglular piece of 1/2" plywood. The 2 outer ones formed the left & right walls of the awning, & I installed the same cedar siding on them as I had on the garage. I then attached the 3 small trusses to a rectangle backing, also 1/2" plywood, & attached it to the exterior wall on the garage above the door from the inside with 3" wood screws.

It's very sturdy, extends about 3 feet over the door pad, & has had snow loads on it with never any problem. It's been up 10 years & has saved me from getting drenched while I fumble for keys in the rain. :)

Here's a sketch:
