I removed about 4 of the cheap metal shelves from this wall (also painted it white with Dry-lock paint) I now intend to install shelving, attached to the wall.. (framed with 2x4s) I was thinking about having the shelves about 12 inches wide. That way when I am parked in there, I can still work on the passenger side of the car. Any suggestions on how to build them? I was thinking of even building doors for them..

(I have a lame 2 car tuck-under)

Not trying to rag on you....but before you get flamed....do a search....very common topic here with lots of posts. Read through them and then post more specific questions.

I've built shelves out of 2x2's (for the frames) and 3/4" plywood for the shelving. I tie everything together with Simpson Strong Tie 2x2 connectors. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

ok, I'll scrap the 2x4 idea.. I need all the extra room I can get.. I love the extra room I have without the shelves along that wall, but I just have too many things to store to not build shelves.

I built cheap light duty shelves out of 2x3's and furring strips. I do also like those Simpson strong ties at the corners, for those of us hack-job homeowners that can't join wood for nothing they make the job easy.

Don't discount those "cheap" shelves. These are some that I got really cheaply and others that were found at curbside on garbage days. You'll note that there is minimal bracing on most. Some are just bolted to the wall and supported by (1/8") wires from above. Plenty strong enough for anything I'll ever put on those shelves.

Here's the pics as promised. You can build these modular from the ground up or the ceiling down (as I did in this instance). You can see where I added on the jack-stand shelf just by continuing the effort. I made the shelf about 2" taller than me so I don't end up with lumps on my head. Again, all 2x2's, 3/4" plywood and Simpson Strong-Tie fittings. At 180 lbs., I can do pull-ups from the shelves.

Here is what I came up with.. I am really happy with it.. The first cabinet I made was from plywood.. I then made the rest out of melamine.
