I am looking for anything car related for key storage in the garage.

I have seen key racks cut out looking like tool trucks (can't remember the brand) for hanging keys.

Does anyone know of anything like that?

Thanks, Tom

Do you have any windows in your garage? In general I think it's a good idea to have your keys out of plain site (even if you have windows) in case someone breaks in.

I'm planning on getting some sort of box (similar to rsieracki's link) but might make it out of some old toolbox or random metal box.

I use a couple of those HF key boxes. Mounted on the end of my bench out of sight. It also helps to drop by walmart and pick up some of those round paper key tags edged with metal. Everytime I get a key, I tag it. saves a lot of frustration.

I don't like leaving mine out in the open. I store them in a small drawer in one of my tool boxes.

Lock spare keys up! My keys are always in my safe. Discovery had a show a few years ago where ex-thiefs would break into houses to show the weaknesses. They loved stealing all sorts of good ****, loading it into the victims car, and then driving away. If someone is stealing my stuff they sure aren't going to be hauling it away in my cars.

note: they never had to look hard for keys, one guy left the keys for each of his toys in the ignition.

NUTTSGT - It's cheap carpeting that I think was intended to be used for the trunk of a car. I use the ribbed rubber that you can get off a roll in the flooring section of places like Home Depot for most of my tool box drawers. I tried carpet for some of my "lighter" duty drawers and really like it though. That's been in there for about 25 years.

How about taking an old breaker box, ripping the guts out of it and mounting a peice of plywood on the inside with some hooks inside it? You could recess the box in the wall or surface mount it. If surface mounted, run a piece of conduit up to the ceiling to make it look like it's in use.

Im too paranoid to leave keys out in the open. All spare vehicle keys are kept in the house in a pretty secure and inconspicuous place. Incidentally it's in a place where if someone broke in, They'd have no choice but to pass in front of a motion detector to get to them. For the tools, I have one set to the cart, box and bench on my truck keys and the other complete set is on my shop keys, which are kept in the same place as the spare vehicle keys when I'm not using them. The wife leaves her keys and purse in the open when she's home and after she goes to bed. Drives me nuts. Often times I'll bring them up to the bedroom on my way to bed. That drives her nuts when she can't find them the next day lol
I do like the breaker panel idea. Used lockable ones should be easy enough to find.

SWEET!!! That is exactly what I was looking for. I like the stealth approach when it is closed as well.

Thanks, Tom

I was thinking of recessing the box portion into the wall so that it looked like it was only a "Route-66" sign.

Not car related but I used an old fuse pannel box. The smaller size that used to use the old round fuses. I gutted it and hung hooks on the inside.

A fuel pump bypass button is for killing your fuel pump. It works very well for a car with a carb as if the car gets hot-wired the theifs will only get as far as the gas in the fuel bowls will last (maybe a mile at most), and when the car does die it will be in the middle of the street where it will get lots and lots of attention. If your car is efi they wont be able to run the cas as the fuel pump is not getting any power. Most people put a small switch/ relay combo under the drivers seat or under the dash. Cheap security system....

my s-10 is 4.3 TBI (not the original engine)
i installed aftermarket mechanical guages for oil press, eng & trans temp.
fuel pump relay is closed by the eng oil pressure switch, so at the guage i have a pressure switch tied into the fuel pump relay.
at start up, theres no "immediate" oil pressure to close the relay, so i have a momentary push button under the steering column to bypass the switch and momentarily power up the realy to turn the fuel pump on.
more on the safety side, if the truck rolls, and i loose oil pressure, no power to the relay and the fuel pump cuts off, and kills the engine.

when i built the truck originally, i had one toggle switch to turn on the fuel pump and primary cooling fan,
i rolled the truck 2nd time out with it, and it stayed running laying nearly upside down. :eyecrazy:

by the time i realized it was still running, (i was checking on my passenger), the eng oil pressure pro light was on, and the guage was reading 0 psi. :shocking:
that got me thinking back to my off road racing days, any vehicle that had an electric fuel pump was required to have a pressure switch that activated the fuel pump(s), bypass button allowed cold eng starts.

I used to have one of those in my MGA. It was called a Lucas fuel pump. ... nothing a few whacks with the knock off hammer wouldn't fix.

That would be ME, if my car or motorcycle is in my locked garage, the key is in the ignition. I have a spare set of keys in the house and the car or bike I am driving that week sits in the driveway but the ones I am not driving are in the garage with the key in the ignition so I don't lose it.

I've done that. I restored an MGB and all was going well until I needed the key to start it. :headscrat I finally found it ...3 months later!

Thanks for all of the suggestions. This isn't for anything top secret or car keys. Just a few cabinets with a bunch of **** and gates outside. Nothing a thief would care about. After this post I was surfing flebay and found this. It will be mounted tomorrow. Exactly what I was looking for. Got it for $19 + $10 shipping. Size is about 16"x16" and is made of a thick poly.

If you don't care about them hanging in order just inside something, you can use one of these to put the keys in:

Lid comes off to hold this:

Just remove it and put keys inside.

I have mine in a miniature craftsman tool box specifically made for keys. I found it at an antique fair. I will have to take pics of it.

If you look at the sign closely, the Route 66 portion is the portion that has depth to it. Where the keys hang is just a flat plate, so there is nothing to recess into the wall. So if one was to look where keys are hidden in a garage, the depth of the sign would be a tipoff.

If you are really wanting to hide keys but leave them in the garage, take a piece of sheetmetal, mount it under the bench top somewhere, then take a couple of the magnetic Hide-A-Key boxes and put them there to hide them.

Not the best but I always leave my tractor key and my lawn tractor key on them as I only have the one of each and prefer that to losing them and having two big decorations parked in my garage. Not that I'm too worried about either, doubt many thiefs around here would bother stealing a 48 year old IH tractor or 25 year old lawn mower.

I have an old, large Lyon key vault that was used at an auto dealership. Its big enough for all my keys, spares, even loose Master locks. When I had the shop, we lettered it so it could be easily seen, now its kinda conspicuous. But all the keys for the family cars stay in the house so wife or nanny can find them easily.

It also came with about 10,000 of those old green paper key tags so I'm stocked for life :D
