Ideas for new building

I hav finished my shop (40 x 60 x 18) and am ready for electrical. I really don't want to attach to the walls and I am thinking about running my conduit on the lower purlin (7 foot from floor) and then going drop downs, either physically joined or lock plug into a single gang box. Comment/ideas?

I have the same size shop. I'd recommend a sub panel on each wall.
I've gray electric PVC to the shop in several places... There are lots of ways to do it, but your idea is completely valid. I have not done "lock plugs" to other outlets - I'd assume that's a no-no, but not entirely sure what you mean.

I'd assume what he meant was to Twist-lok style receptacles

Yes, that way the cord would remain fastened.

I am not sure PVC is code correct due to the potential for damage, In my use it will be 7 feet or above and I done see any problem

Oh...the drop is going to be cord?
If you fasten the box it's considered as a "replacement for permanent wiring methods" which is prohibited. The only way to use cord is do what is called a pendant, with a suitable connector body and the free cord hanging unfastened to anything except the box above.
(I showed a straight blade but you get the idea)

This is how we do it. Its called a Kellem grip. A plug cord shouldn't just hang from a box unless it has stress relief of some sort. You can also get Kellem connectors.
