Now that the garage is built I would like to start back on the restoration of my car. For that I need to do quite a bit of painting small(er) items, headers, motor parts, door panels, etc... Does anyone have any 'plans' for building a paint booth? I do want some type of air circulation and exhaust solution with the booth design. Ideas welcomed! Thanks & GOD Bless, Chad

If you check around at sites like autobody101, autobodystore, or hotrodders you should be able to find a lot of info.
You definitely need good ventilation as clear coats kick up a lot of fog. Also need really good lighting and a supplied fresh air system for breathing.

I built a booth in my garage to paint my car. I shiping taped a bunch of 1x3 together to make a booth, draped it with plastic, over a tarp, 20" box fan with a crappy filter leading directly out of the booth to the exterior, 3 20" crappy filters for intake air, respirator and a bunch of portable lights. Work great. Lots of people will have lots of ideas. Just dont over think it.

Usually the fan is for removing the over spray from the inside air to keep it from settling on the painted part. A lot will depend on your painting skills and proper mixing of paint and reducer for the particular application.

Use PVC pipe to make the frame and then clear plastic, make a opening for a box fan and a filter on opposite ends. This is all i have used for years works great lots of people use this method. Dont glue all the joints so you can dissemble it when its not needed. Google.

How small?

I made one from a clothes dryer box.

That might be a bit too small. I bought some 2" PVC pipe and elbows a few nights ago. I am working on my design and will post some photos in the next few days. I have an old furnace squirrel fan that I plan to build a stand for to 'exhaust' the fumes through a filtered wood box. We'll see what I am able to create with what I have around here.

Google portable paint spray booth design and look at the images you will get all kinds of ideas. A lot of them use clear plastic and some sort of knock down frame.

Thanks for all your help & advice. I have decided not to build a paint booth and utilize a true, actual paint booth one an hour from home for the restoration project.

I made one out of 3 pieces of 1/2" electrical conduit, bent 90* radius' with my conduit bender, then used connectors to form a U-shaped curtain rod. Dimensions were roughly 7'x9'. I attached it to the back of my shop overhead door rail with conduit connectors, and used 1/4" rope to support the front of the 'U',. Bought a 10'x25' heavy mil plastic tarp from Lowes, and folded over the top 6", installed brass eyelets every 12". Then used metal shower curtain snap-rings to hang it from the curtain rod. All that was left to do was cover the back of the door and floor with a disposable plastic paint tarp, and put a box fan exhausting outside (by raising the door 10" or so when needed).

I put a metal table in the "booth" to paint the parts, and moved them to a seperate drying table outside the booth, when they were ready to handle. It worked out so well, I will certainly use it again. Meanwhile, it is stored in a cabinet, out of the way.

Just watch that the movement of air does not move the plastic into your parts or you.
